Eh, delivery is super convenient. I’ve done it both ways. Yes, I’m willing to pay for someone else to go to the hassle of getting that food to me. So far, the delivered food has been hot.
But my favorite Chinese place is too far away to deliver to us. So we drive to pick up from it. Mmmm hot&sour soup.
Yeah, I get that. If I’m in a situation where I really need the convenience of delivery then I usually order from a pizza place that handles their own delivery. (And one of the local ones also serves a bunch of pasta dishes and sandwiches and wings and other appetizers and salads and even a few dessert items that are pretty tasty, so it doesn’t even have to be pizza… just something from this “pizza place”.)
But then it’s like a $3.50 delivery charge plus whatever I choose to tip the driver. I’m willing to pay that.
As opposed to Grubhub where it’s like a $5 delivery charge plus tip to the driver plus the food is like 20% more expensive. That’s where my inner cheap actuary comes out.
I guess the more I think about it, it’s also that delivery is inferior, in my mind. The food is much colder than if I get it myself and it takes longer.
And the two local pizza places that I frequent seem to be much better about delivering food fast & hot than other vendors.
I have a lot of bad memories of eating stone cold Grubhub-delivered food at work lunch meetings pre-Covid.
Other than pizza or Chinese food, I can probably count on one hand the number of times we got to-go food from a restaurant in the year preceding the pandemic.
I can probably count on two hands the number of times we got take out in the past year. (Again, other than pizza or Chinese)
I think we got delivery once because it was cold and rainy out. All other times, I just go pick it up.
While restaurants did agree to their contracts with these services, certainly their margins are much lower and many of them don’t make up the difference on volume. Some do of course.
As others said, the food often arrives cold when you order from these vendors as the drivers are often making stops at many restaurants. That makes it a bit different than pizza, where pies usually go out the door hot together, kept warm in insulated bags, and delivery areas are limited.
You are helping your local restaurant if you call them and pick it up, and getting warm food as a bonus. You don’t have to hang out there if you call in advance.
My brother in law owns a restaurant and refused to use any delivery service due to margins that don’t work for him. He got some other local places to join him in a new local delivery app he created that has minimal cost to restaurant owners. So far it’s DC only, but it will be interesting to see if that model can succeed.
My brother owns a restaurant too. He never used any of those services pre covid, but did join one during the pandemic. I imagine he’ll be very happy to ditch them when things return to normal
We have a place in New Albany, IN called New Albanian. They have an excellent Detroit Style pizza. It’s my favorite kind of pizza. If I was getting delivery though I would get Jets. Do you have one of those nearby?
No, I am not in Michigan or any of the 19 states it operates franchises, and I’m not visiting the Phoenix area anytime soon. I might be heading to Michigan for 4th of July for a wedding and reception. Yes, it’s actually a destination wedding for a couple from CA, though they now live in Miami.
So, if there I’ll be hitting Shield’s or Luigi’s Original.
Provel cheese is… polarizing. It’s the opposite of gourmet, but I love it, maybe because I started eating it in college. I haven’t seen it much outside of Missouri.
You usually get it with toasted ravioli, which I also love. And if you get it at Imo’s in Saint Louis at least some of the locations sell Ted Drewes custard, so you can have that heart attack ASAP.
