The other night my son was working on an analysis of a passage from The Tempest and asked for my help (I know nothing about The Tempest, but still). We deciphered most of it, but were having trouble parsing one sentence.
I put it into the chatbot, and it quickly became apparent that it knew less of what was going on in the passage than we did. It told us that it was spoken by the wrong character (it was Antonio, chatbot said Prospero), and said that it was about him trying to save someone’s life (it was about him trying to convince someone else to kill the guy).
My son ended up coming up with a pretty good reading of the sentence. At least, I hope it was pretty good…
That’s funny. Decades ago I read a book in which the defining test for the AI was being able to write a passing thesis on the Tempest.
I wonder in part if it is like google adsense. It got creepy because the journalist asked creepy questions.
I have a friend who fills in as a talk radio host on occasion. I asked ChatGPT to give me a Rodney Dangerfield style joke about talk radio hosts. The best one it came up with:
“Talk radio hosts are always giving us their opinions. You know about opinions, right? They are like microphones, everyone’s got one and they all sound horrible.”
Yes, completely, the whole conversation could be considered a clever attack.
Still, the journalist didn’t say anything that a curious user wouldn’t say.
I tried to get ChatGPT itself to talk to me even half as creepy with no luck.
