Car Buying During Pandemic Conditions

I can drive a stick. My dad’s opinion was that everyone should know how to drive one.

I learned on a manual trans, but I’d already driven motorcycles so at least the concept of a clutch wasn’t new. When I was in college my family bought a 1952 Buick with a three-in-the-tree that wasn’t synchronized and I learned how to double clutch.

There’s better ways of doing that then grinding someone’s paycheque. If they want to offer reduced comp, that’s fine. But personally I don’t think I’d ask.

And yet, you went back for one.

Bought a Nissan Leaf in December from AutoNation. The model I wanted was 600 miles away, so I paid a transport
fee rather than going there to buy. Other than that MSRP. No trade, my youngest driver will be 16 soon. 0.0 for 72 from Nissan, so that was nice. Next trim up had a “backup camera” that produces synthetic perspective that is like looking down on the car from above. I thought that was slick, but not worth an extra $2K to me.

Costco Auto Purchase didn’t (doesn’t?) cover Leafs. Sam’s did, but local dealer wanted MSRP +2500. I said that doesn’t sound like a Sam’s price and stopped communicating once they confirmed price.

Two. I went back for two!

Good tip! :+1:t2:

I have a car question, but it doesn’t need its own thread so I’m just gonna.

Sometimes when I’m on the interstate or whatever fast 2-lane (*uh, 4-lane, 2 the same way) road, people in the left lane drive up beside me and match my speed. This happened last Thursday on the way home from work by a white Charger with like a black back window cover thing and tinted windows (which I assume were to make it look fancy).

Is this some sort of muscle car bonding ritual? Am I supposed to assume we are now racing? Google is no help and sometimes when this happens I have kids in the car and I’m like WTF guy beside me I’m moming over here, not duding out or whatever you’re doing.

Thanks in advance.

I assume by “2-lane road” you mean two lanes going the same direction (it’s more common* to refer to the total number of lanes in both directions) . . .
.* at least in my circles :grimacing:

Without knowing more about what else is going on around you, and the nature of the car “getting up to your position” and holding it there . . . kind of hard to say much of anything.

But my naïve guess is that someone is checking you out if they’re actually “slowing down” to match your speed. My suggestion is to simply slow down for a bit; let them get quite ahead of you; and then resume your speed.

If the other car decides to continue to match your speed; go NASCAR on their ass.

You are female, they are probably not. Most likely checking you out

This. They see a car that’s interesting, and take a peek at who is driving it.

That’s possible, although I was thinking more of “They see a driver that’s interesting . . .”.

Slowing down will give the best clue, IMO.

I don’t generally see enough of the driver to decide to slow down if I’m just driving along. But I often notice details of cars. And since she’s mostly seeing this from “muscle car” drivers, I’m guessing it’s the car that’s the initial attraction-of-interest.

also, if I don’t like how the other car is driving, might give them the stink eye

I agree with other comments that they were probably checking out you or your car. However one other thought occurred to me: sometimes I encounter other drivers that increase their speed when they notice someone trying to pass them. It’s particularly annoying when I’m passing someone and they speed up to match the MPH I set my cruise control on.

I’ve seen maybe two stick shifts in my life, both when I was a kid. So I think not

You see the last time this happened I did slow down out of an automatic aversion to having somebody directly beside me to the left (I’m pretty blind in that eye, and also he was being weird) and then I noticed my speed was under 65 which is abnormal for me (and definitively weird for left lane guy to be matching that for a noticeable period of time).

I’m definitely doing something wrong because they normally linger for a while and then speed off ahead of me in apparent frustration (or embarrassment?).

Oh oh, and it’s happened to husband before too. He’s cute but not girls-stop-on-the-interstate-to-check-him-out cute, probably.

I’ll be the judge of that. pic plz
