Toby and I are playing the Nationals. We had zero success the first two days which was demoralizing. Then we were 4th in a big regional open pairs (18 pts). He needs 15 platinum points to become a Platinum Life Master and I need 11. We entered the Spingold as the 42 seed (really 48, they randomize 41-48). 25 teams advance and the remaining 52 were put in groups of 4 to reduce to 39. We drew the 61 seed and were down 18 after 15 but won more in the second half to advance immediately. We celebrated by winning the afternoon side game. Had we lost we would have had an opportunity to beat the 68 seed to advance. That was 5 platinum! Tomorrow we play 60 boards against 23 seed Amoils. We still have two more pair events to try to amass 10 platinum…

Team Amoils was very pleasant while they kicked our teeth in. We suspect our teammates didn’t do us any favors. We did get a slam vs game swing on this board:
In 6H I got the QC lead and ruffed a club immediately and was able to draw the trump and set up the long club for 12 tricks
