Bridge: MSC 2025 Discussion

In our original discussion on F, there was no discussion of whether 4NT was Blackwood or explicitly whether 4C was Gerber. No one voting for 4C suggested it was Gerber. Since we cannot change our submission anyway, I haven’t consulted BWS system notes to try to decide. In retrospect, I’m thinking 4NT natural is more likely and that 4C is not Gerber, but we may do OK even if 4C is Gerber (for score; we might get called out on the comment).

The three people, including me, who submitted revised picks all improved. (I believe there may have been some typos in ST’s original picks, though the ones I’m showing are the ones he e-mailed to me.) Another great month for our Submitted (and we were panelists). 790 was tied for 3-6 in the monthly honor roll.

NN’s original, and he didn’t send revisions, was also 790. Sweet Tooth’s revised 770 would tie for 10-18. 64 made the honor roll, with at least 730.

This means we were in the top 5 (or tied for top 5) each of the 3 months were were panelists. (July, August, October)

I will be traveling out of the US in late September. I expect I will be able to access the internet, but if not BTDT will be submitting what he concludes our Consensus is.

A. Pass. Yuck, but a stiff ace isn’t much help for setting up the clubs.
B. 2D. Passing too pessimistic
C. 3C. I am not liking this set at all.
D. Pass. Certainly a reasonable choice
E. 7D. Sounds like he’s 7-4, hopefully with both kings, and the diamond Q would be nice..
F. 4D. Yuck. But is 4NT any better?
G. From ST by e-mail:

Two other regular MSC entrants (not part of our group) agreed with that meaning. I don’t know what ST is going to do, but based on my major suit holdings and considerable extra length in clubs I’m ooing to bid 4C.
H. Diamond 8.

As noted, BTDT may have to submit our answers.

From NN by e-mail:

On G (assuming he’s referring to the 4C bid), he’s agreeing with me, not ST, since so far ST has not chosen a bid.

A. Pass. Close call. 3NT could be frigid, but seems more likely clubs won’t run and pd is unlikely to have two side entries.
B. 2NT. 3NT most likely game, but pd can bail to 3C if she bid just on decent clubs and nothing else.
C. Double. A good partner won’t bid diamonds.
D. 2 clubs. Enough I don’t want to pass. Ten of clubs tips the scales for me.
E. 7 diamonds. I know, partner could have gone slower if interested in a grand, but this hand is just so good in context.
F. 3 hearts. I don’t want to play 3NT, and want to explore which black game is better. Will raise 3S to 4S, hoping it is an offer to play.
G. 4 diamonds. Hoping this shows 5+ clubs, can’t think what shape would bid this way with fewer clubs with pass being permissible.
H. Club ten.

We again have a leader on all 8, as was certain here after the first 6 voters, as long as voter 7 took either of the tied choices on A and F. Now all except A and F are sure things, since they are 5-2 or 6-1.

Interestingly, there are still no more than 2 calls with a vote on any problem.
