Daughter has a double ear infection and is on a gross-tasting antibiotic. She fought taking it the first couple times since it’s gross, but after explaining ahead of time this morning that her ears won’t feel better if she doesn’t, she took it like a champ. And promptly requested some milk.

Got to explain the concept of inflation to my son when he asked how much my husband got as a kid almost 40 years ago, and the answer was a quarter.

Well, first I slipped up and said “well, dad’s parents were poor.” And he responded, “so the toof fairy didn’t want them to steal dad’s toof money?” Crap. Forgot we’re lying to our kids about these things.

Kind of a weird question to think about. It’s a very slow spin for the earth (1 turn/day) but fast for us (up to 1000 mph). But the 1000 mph has to change direction, through very gradual acceleration, and also become zero if you visit the north poll. Seems like this would cause some huge problems if we ever invent long range teleportation!!!

Also even if the earth was spinning really fast, not sure we’d ever really “feel it” except as less gravity.

Agreed, my best understanding is that what we feel as a force is acceleration although we don’t feel the earth’s spin’s changing speed so I don’t have a great explanation for that. Similarly the earth changes orbital speed throughout its orbit which we also don’t feel.

OK, :handpuppets:. The relative strength of the rotational acceleration is less than 1% of the gravitational acceleration, so it is too weak to be noticed. Seems pretty straightforward to me. I think the physics stack exchange also quantifies the orbital acceleration values too (IIRC smaller than rotational).

Oh so in theory we could feel it, it’s just puny?

And is how much you feel from acceleration based on the relative change or absolute? So if I go 0 to 60 do I feel more, the same or less than 60 to 120?

So maybe at certain times of the year we feel gravity in an ever so slightly different direction than straight down? Haha

Imagine the earth was spinning 10x faster. So 2.4 hour days. IIRC centripetal acceleration is v^2/r, so it would be 100x bigger??? So instead of 0.35% of gravity it would be 35% of gravity?

Then you and everything would weigh 35% less? close to the equator. And weigh the same near the poles.

I don’t think seasons would change the direction of the force… The force at the equator would still be upwards, no matter which way the earth spins, right??? Because it all moves together??? I think???

That said, I think the direction would change with latitude??? Like at a 45 degree angle, gravity would be downward, and the spinning force diagonal. Though the spinning force would also be a lot less strong. But yeah that would be weird. I guess you’d build everything at an angle so your coffee doesn’t spill? Actually? I guess you’d just call the new direction “up”, and in practice it would be like building on an incline. So maybe nbd???

Also calling centripetal motion a “force” at all is a bit nonsensical. It’s almost more like not falling as much. I think it’s technically the same exact “force” that keeps spaceships from falling?

(Although in a very nerdy sense, gravity is also not really a force at all either.)

I feel like the coreolis effect is also part of this.

Yes, different effect at different latitudes (max at equator, 0 at poles). As far a seasonality goes, the acceleration due to the earth’s rotation is invariant, but I think the acceleration due to earth’s orbit around the sun would vary due to the orbit being an ellipse (and perhaps also due to the tilt of the earth’s rotational axis even on points that are opposite across the major orbital axis)

I’m not sure what you’re saying there, but I don’t think you should ever feel like you’re falling towards or away from the sun either, since we’re in orbit with the sun, so the cetripetal acceleration should cancel out the gravity, at every point??? Maybe? I think?
