BIH Thread

Yeah, reasonable take. Sorry about your cousin

I’ll put Anita Bryant here.

I don’t understand people who need to so activist against any group of people who are just living their lives

This is as good a place as any to complain about her obit in the NYT.

Anita Bryant, Whose Anti-Gay Politics Undid a Singing Career, Is Dead at 84 https://www.nytimes.com/2025/01/09/arts/music/anita-bryant-dead.html?unlocked_article_code=1.oU4.yUTc.E14yDRw7VDrZ

The former beauty queen and spokeswoman for Florida orange juice was an all-American entertainer before she began crusading against L.G.B.T.Q. rights.

It really reads to me like, “Good singer/actress cancelled due to unpopular opinions”.

It’s true that her acting career was hurt by her nasty politics. But they bury

She founded Save Our Children, an anti-gay organization that gave rise to the modern-day religious right’s strategy of tying homosexuality to perceived threats against children. Her public image (many called her a “Christian celebrity”) was changed forever.

That she was an incredibly important political figure, with agency, who was very successful in her second career of keeping sexual minorities in their place. No, she wasn’t financially successful. But she spoke about having made a choice to do what she felt was right.

WaPo did it much better

Anita Bryant, pitchwoman who crusaded against gay rights, dies at 84

She became one of the most incendiary cultural warriors of the 1970s and saw her prosperous singing career implode as a result

So yes, i agree with @PatientZombie . But i also wanted to diss the new York times for minimizing her importance and agency, even as their headline sounds vaguely sympathetic towards her.

Le Pen is also a worthy entrant for this thread.

i also belulieve her OJ gig lasted much longer than i would have expected given her general unpopularity

They initially promised to support her, regardless of her political stance. Eventually that became untenable.

I couldn’t find this thread when I posted Le Pen’s death in the Dead Thread but am happy to repeat my sentiments here:

“Too bad his daughter has been more successful.”

I only know who she is from reading the Tales of the City books.

Unfortunately I knew of her in real time as she was in the news a lot in the 1970s.

Ditto. And she was a powerful and unpleasant woman for many years.

I mean they do use the word “crusading”, so it’s more than just having the unpopular opinions… it’s trying to win over as many as possible to her POV. I read the bits you quoted as blaming her for killing her own career, not that she’s a victim of cancel culture. She had it all and chose to give it up.

That said, this chick was before my time and I know nothing about her at all.

My older trivia teammates had to explain who she was to me. Never heard of her.

no

Do you really want to attract the SS’s attention given recent changes in leadership?

ugh, SSPX :exams: I don’t like the current Pope because he’s basically making the same mistakes the Church made in the 60s/70s with too much obsession with social/political issues and not enough actual catechesis, but, I don’t want to party like it’s 999 with the rad-trad Catholic Pharisees either.

We need another John Paul II.

former member of the boston archdiocese says no thanks. he could have done things and chose not to.

Bummer he lived long enough to see some of his sick fantasies come to fruition with the current administration.
