Ao fan's office furniture thread

the aeron chair is good for a few hours and then it is OW OW OW.

just finally got around to plugging in my wireless keyboard so i don’t have to use the laptop keyboard directly anymore. with it being off to the side so that i could see the larger screen, i was constantly twisting my body to use it. not ideal. not sure how i feel about the keyboard tray, but I do have enough leg room since i can make it as high as i want to, so that’s good. I think that celalta talked about how he centered the keyboard tray and that wasn’t ideal since the mouse is off to the side, so it should not be exactly centered to the screens. now i see exactly what he means since the guy who put mine together also centered it. not ideal. i can move the screen around though. i also had to entirely remove the hand rest thingy on the keyboard tray. made my hands too high for this keyboard i bought. otherwise a wireless keyboard/mouse combo rocks.

the website is confusing. they have a new york “showroom”, but they give no hours. does that mean you have to make an appointment or something or they don’t sell to individual people, just companies? it’s all very intimidating looking.

I had to make an appointment, and it was some sort of accommodation, since they don’t really do retail sales. It might not be worth the bother during a pandemic. It was kinda a pain even when i did it.

yeah, then i’ll probably look for something else then.

in using the keyboard tray for a day, i’m a fan. it raises up much higher than the one i had at work and hated and therefore had removed.

If you’re looking for a good time at the keyboard, something with cherry keys (and add o-rings) plus a gaming mouse. Skip the wireless. Much nicer to work on.

Yeah, having the keyboard tray be off center to the desk would make the keyboard center to the screen(s) and the desk, because of the keyboard being offcenter on the keyboard tray. It’s not at all how you expect to install something though. Keyboard goes in the middle, thus tray must go in the middle.

I think if either of us had gone with the weirder looking one where the mouse tray was a separate piece that attached, having the keyboard tray installation centered would make sense.

However, I’ve learned to deal with it by changing my position to the screens so that I’m facing my primary instead of facing the center of the two screens, and turning the keyboard tray to be centered to the primary screen.

Also, I’m certainly not changing the installation of it now, so figuring out a way to deal was good. Maybe when everyone goes back to life outside the house and I can move my desk back to our “office/gym” that is open to the rest of the house, I’ll disassemble and redrill holes, but it’s not worth it at this point.

My main keyboard has cherry keys, but this is the first time I’ve heard of o-rings, and after googling, I think I may need them, so that I don’t always need to be on mute while taking notes in meetings. I don’t know about the gaming mouse though, my spouse has one, and it’s obnoxious :stuck_out_tongue: I like my logitech m705.

Wait, you’re saying wireless is bad? I like wireless because I dont need to figure out where to put the wires.

The mouse is testy though. I think my mouse without the combined keyboard works better. That one is wireless too though, but no keyboard so I had to switch it

It’s not bad,it’s just that wired is fine as well.

For those looking for an entry level education on keyboards, the latest rage are mechanical keyboards. If you remember the old IBM keyboards from the 80’s, they’re like that, though nicer. Very nice to work on. Nerds get all crazy about the type of key switch that’s used in mechanical keyboards. The cadillac or at least the most common seems to be Cherry switches. Their different switches are assigned a colour based on the attributes of the switch. I settled on cherry browns for office work because they’re the least loud/clicky. Note that there’s a variety of manufacturers using cherry switches so there’s lots of choice.

I added o-rings to further silence my keyboard. Basically pull the keys off and add a plastic ring to the bottom of each key so that it cushions out instead of hard clicking at the bottom. It’s OK, it’s still not completely silent but then it can’t be I guess and retain the tactile feel.

For a mouse, I’m not a gamer but I have one of these, dirt cheap and comfortable:

A gamer would probably get testy over a $14 mouse, but for office work it’s great.

On some of my PC’s I have this one which gets high ratings, but I don’t like as much as the one above:

Well, since we’re going down the gaming route, wireless can have some perceptible input lag (especially depending on how far it is from the receiver). Wired ensures you have that nice instantaneous movement when you do your excel shortcuts.

After having issues with two cheap wireless mice, I got this one:

I’m old, my response time isn’t good enough that I need a wired mouse to minimize lag.

Yeah, I’d bet that even gamers don’t notice a difference. It’s more about gaming mice being higher quality and more comfortable IMO. I’ve never had lag or any issue with even with a cheap wireless mouse.

The one I bought seems crazy expensive for a mouse, but I’ve been a lot happier with it. Even so, if I don’t notice that the battery is low I get some weird problems. But they have been fixed immediately by plugging it (it does work wired, too) 100% of the time. And when it’s battery is charged, it’s a really nice experience.

I’d say if you want to go cheap, go wired. I’ve never had an issue with a cheap wired photo-mouse. (The mechanical ones do get “sticky”.) But I had problems with two cheap wireless ones. One caused all sorts of problems, and the other was weirdly uncomfortable to hold in my left hand. (I’m left handed.)

Could have just been me, I was using one of those logitech wireless mice and was using a standalone monitor so my laptop was somewhat removed from the mouse and had some irritating input lag. This was a few years ago though.

my logitech wireless mouse was great. my new one is a different brand, that’s not as good and it sometimes doesn’t register. only reason i’m using it is because it has a keyboard with it so one key for both plugged into my laptop.

whatever you’re linking to there didn’t show up @Lucy

It did, you have to click the word one, the : makes it look like the link would be after the colon, but it’s the word one before it.

oooooh yes it wasn’t clearly obvious that the word was a link.

hard to even try chairs in person. like there’s a steelcase store in manhattan in columbus circle, but it’s temporarily closed due to covid. so it’s like do you blindly buy one based on it looking good in the specs and reviews?

i’ve been shown to be terrible at buying the right chair or me even when i test it out anyway.

oh, i see one that is open, but it’s by appointment only. that’s intimidating.
