Between this an TN attempting to influence coverage in other states, it’s going to be a interesting time for health insurers I think. I wonder how many will abandon TennCare vs abandoning states that require gender affirming coverage.
I don’t understand how the TN law isn’t blatantly unconstitutional.
I don’t have any faith in SCotUS striking it down, so I’m assuming it will be a reality and we are basically hoping the big insurers choose to exit TennCare instead of exiting Massachusetts and California entirely.
I still think if only a few percent of people de-transition then that’s not enough to motivate a company to pull the plug on the whole thing and am assuming it’s not going to have the intended effect. If anything, they’re inadvertently helping some of the genderfluid. Are the hormones notably more expensive for one gender than the other?
states have many laws/rules that make it hard to do business in them. and perhaps harder then to leave them if you start. maybe there are ways around it - like creating a state specific subisiiary. but possibly not.
No, the law specifically addresses subsidaries and related companies. It’s a really dangerous bill.
Yes, testosterone is a controlled substance, so it’s harder to get/more expensive. Detransition is <1%, so it could be too small to matter.
In positive news, all 12 anti-transgender bills in Virginia died in the Senate today (Thanks to a 22-18 D majority)
Florida has proposed a bill that would make accusing a person transphobic defamation by definition, resulting in a $35,000 fine.
You left out the good part. Actual proof that the person is transphobic isn’t a defense if it is based on either their religious or scientific beliefs.
Edit: And because they want to make sure the law is unconstitutional, the defamation doesn’t have to occur in Florida, online statements count.
The thing with “unconstitutional” is that they know they own the Supreme Court, so it probably won’t be ruled that way.
For the first time in 2023, trans rights got a win in a Republican trifecta state when the WY house rejected a trans healthcare ban.
amazing!
Yay for the more libertarian side of Wyoming politics standing up to the national party. My understanding is that the bill died in committee, rather than the general house. I wonder if it is easier to kill these things in committee where you need a smaller number of Republicans to vote no?
One of the arguments raised against the bill was fear that it was raise individual insurance premiums by putting Wyoming health regulations at odds with federal ones. Self-preservation ftw.
Yeah, it was 5-2 in committee. I expect that’s the easier task, but hard to say because it’s so rare.
Florida proposing a bill that would require courts to remove kids from parent’s custody if they supported their need for gender affirming care.
Yikes.
Local member of parliament (national) creates a bill to allow trans folks to claim asylym in Canada.

I’ve seen the petition circulating — I’m glad to see it’s gotten some traction. It’s politically risky for Canada to open asylum claims to Americans, but it would be amazing for many American trans people that are starting to feel trapped.
I’m not certain it’s super risky politically. Granted it’s more a left wing thing, but Canada tilts left anyway.
And they are talking about increasing immigration substantially already. So this fits I hope.
Though I suspect the intent is more for places where they chop you up with machetes if they think you’re gay. Still, it’s arguable that’s the way the us is going anyway.
