I still find it hard to see the parking space lines in my backup camera so I am a bit slow backing in. I usually won’t do it if there are a bunch of other cars trying to park.
I do prefer backing in when in a parking garage bc it’s so much easier getting out. On surface lots I pull through when possible.
Not sure why but I’m a worse backer when I use the backup camera. My dad taught me to back and I do quite well just looking through the back window and the mirrors. The camera, even with the helper graphics telling me where the car will go, causes me to do worse.
It’s a lot easier to park a larger vehicle in the center of a parking spot when you back in, at least once you have had enough practice to execute this. Its practically given you need to reverse into a spot when parallel parking - similar geometry of the wheels and turning radius apply to perpendicular parking spots.
If you know what you are doing, backing into a spot should add less than 10 seconds over trying to pull in.
I agree with this, particularly the practice part. I back in whenever possible and am getting better with practice. The backup camera with the lines is a big help. I back into our driveway because it’s easier to charge and take out the shopping from the back.
If I’m at a parking lot I’ll nose in though if there are cars waiting for me so as not to hold up traffic. I will back in if there’s noone else around.
I’ll pull in the vast majority of the time - there is plenty of parking at most places and I’ll usually park a bit further out anyway as any time/effort spent looking for a close spot is quickly lost if you don’t just take a spot towards the open end. A good excuse to add a few more steps in the day. I can swing over the line of an empty spot to get my minivan properly centered.
Costco is the only busy place I normally go and their spots are huge. I do sometimes find myself wishing I had backed in / pulled through when surrounded by giant SUVs/trucks on either side when I leave.
Driving downtown, turned right into the rightmost of two lanes on my side. Needed to get over in a while so turned my blinker on a good 2500 feet before, signaling “yo could somebody please make space?”… Nobody letting me in for some 20 seconds. Finally, the car in front has sped ahead quite a bit and there’s plenty of room to the car behind, to the point I thought he might be intentionally slowing, we’re all smoothly going about 30 mph, so blinker still on I slide over without concern, and they lay on the horn for the next 30 seconds until I turn away.
Lol, if you can’t handle a well-signaled merge at 30 mph, get off the road.
I’m driving eastbound and I see an older lady in the westbound straight lane blocking a good 4-5 cars because she wanted to turn left and there was already a car in the left turn lane.
There’s an intersection where the 2 left lanes can make the turn simultaneously: I watched as buddy in the outside lane cut his turn waaay too sharp and ended up in the inside lane. This is far from the first time I have seen this happen.
