Annoyed Thoughts: archive 1

No doubt. That’s why they haven’t had one cent from me since

American is having some staffing shortages and is cancelling about 1% of all their flights for the next while. In case anyone is looking for one more reason to avoid them.

Not surprising. They laid off a bunch of people during the dark days of the pandemic, while other airlines figured out how to keep their folks employed. So a lot of those pilots and mechanics went to cargo airlines, which were hiring like crazy, and the flight attendants and gate/reservation agents left the industry altogether, I suspect.

One of hubby’s friends is a pilot at American. He didn’t lose his job, but he was a captain and got demoted to first officer. About a 33% cut in pay, he said. But better than the 100% cut in pay that the laid off first officers experienced.

He waited it out and is a captain again. But he had a bunch of seniority at the airline. A first officer who had only been with American for a year or two wasn’t walking away from nearly as much.

That said, I haven’t personally experienced issues with American. Hubby & I flew American for one leg of our vacation a few years ago and it was fine. :woman_shrugging:

one good experience with American means nothing. THEY ARE THE AIRLINES OF THE DEVIL!

Now I’m curious what kind of flights there are in hell

I guess my company (my area?) is now in a hiring freeze? So much for all the advertising I did for the role they aren’t going to fill now :unamused:. Also yay for me being the only actuary (and only female) on the team for a while I guess.

I’ve heard it feels like you sit on the tarmac for eternity.

I had to call in a pest guy for the squirrel in my fireplace chimney. While he was on the roof, he patched up some damage caused by racoons. ******in’ critters!!! :face_with_symbols_over_mouth: :face_with_symbols_over_mouth: :face_with_symbols_over_mouth:

That reminds me of the discovery that a deer had bitten off a good part of one of the branches on the young apple trees I’d planted. I get wanting to eat some of the easier to reach growing apples but why take the whole branch!?

Here is something that I find annoying. My local oil change place charges about 90 bucks for an oil change with synthetic oil. An oil change with regular, non synthetic oil is less than half of that, about $43.

I look at stores and I see that 5 quart jug of regular Penzoil motor oil (quality stuff) is about $19. A 5 quart jug of Mobile-1 (quality stuff) is about $24. Yes, there is a premium price to be paid for synthetic oil. It’s about $5 extra in cost, retail, at a big box store. WTF is the justification at upcharging the oil change $47 extra f&*#ing dollars then?

It’s ridiculous, it seems to be the norm. I’m sure their finance guys figured out this is how to maximize revenue, but if you know what the oil actually costs it pisses you right off.

I wonder if you could pay the $43 for the regular oil change and provide them with the $24 jug of Mobile-1 to use instead of their regular oil.

Then you’d basically get a synthetic oil change for $67 instead of $90. And they wouldn’t be out the regular oil either.

But really, I’m beginning to think I should just learn how to do it myself. Oil changes are such a ripoff. Hubby & I change the oil in our snow-blower. How much more difficult can a car be?

I learned how when I first started driving but I only did it a couple of times.

You (and I) pay it, Mr Purple.

Huh? Deer eat branches. Apple branches and branches of lots of other trees and shrubs. It’s their normal diet.

You must not have many deer. Around here, a common annoyed thought is, “the deer ate all my landscaping to the ground”

You need a hydraulic jack. And jack stands. And an oil basin. And an oil filter wrench. So there’s some startup costs.

By the time you drag the equipment out of the shed, get the car up on stands, crawl around on the ground and get dirty(and you’re going to get oil on you), change the oil, etc. then put everything away, you’re probably an hour. Then you have all this used motor oil to get rid of.

And some cars are not as easy as it looks. I’ve had cars where the oil filter is inaccessible without burning half the skin off your arms on the exhaust. My SO’s last car, I wouldn’t change the oil no-how. Their oil filter required a tool with an 18" extension on it, to get right in behind the firewall.

It’s not hard, but there’s something to be said for paying someone. We use our local mechanic, I suspect they’re cheaper than the quick lube places. They’re certainly better, because he’ll have a quick look around the car for any problems while he’s at it.

Annoyed thought: my local mechanic retired and I haven’t found a good replacement.

Maybe that’s a sad thought, or a frustrated thought.

Perhaps I’ve revealed how recently I’ve become acquainted with any gardening aside from growing grass…
