Guess it depends on my reason for visiting. If I’m visiting to chat with people, no, but often late at night I log on out of boredom. Less of that. Less reaching for my phone to waste time.
What will you do instead to waste time?
I’m definitely keen about just using social media to look at family kids pictures once every month or two, and then I think LinkedIn can be helpful. Haven’t done much with Twitter or Instragram though, and have used reddit less as I’ve slowly moved away from the college-aged male demographic.
I’ve been trying to read through the complete Agatha Christie collection for over a year and just don’t make as much time as I should. I’m also trying to learn a foreign language, which would be time on my phone but of a productive nature. I’m also trying to read the Bible in a year.
I’m not sure how my family would figure out I was still alive if I got rid of Facebook.
My brother & SIL have commented that, once they post something to FB if my SIL’s mother/Brother’s MIL doesn’t “like” it within five minutes, they start to worry if she’s still alive.
It’s the ultimate test. If they don’t notice you’re gone for a long time (my family didn’t) you get to hold it over them emotionally, very satisfying, very healthy.
I’ve got almost 0 social media, and never had. I have:
- here
- reddit, I post in a couple of busy subs. I’ve done two AMA’s in the insurance sector. One for consumers, one for agents.
- I have a blank facebook account. I set it up for marketplace. I think I’ve been on it 4 times total.
Just no interest. I’m sure I’m happier for it. My SO keeps up on facebook with the fam, that’s good enough. I get a status update pretty much daily.
I use FB to keep tabs on my wife’s hot friends…
It’s about time.
People’s opinions are just not that important, in my opinion.
…
…
Wait…
WHERE ARE MY STIMULUS CHECK INFORMATIONS FROM NINE MONTHS AGO???
Guess you’re doing taxes.
Yup. Apparently, someone (I’m using TaxSlayer) needs to know whether I got them and how much they were for, to make sure I got enough. Thing is, SOMEONE in the gov’t knows. Why don’t they just discuss it with each other?
In your bank account, presumably.
Saying what I’m mad about could definitely out me, so I’m just annoyed by reorgs and people not having institutional knowledge, potentially costing lots of money.
Yes, and they know what’s on your W-2 and 1099s and 1098s and 5498s too. But you still have to compile it all for them.
Really at this point the IRS ought to just DO the personal federal income taxes for like 60% of the population. But they don’t.
Self-employed folks and owners of farms and rental properties would need to fill out their own Schedule Cs, Es, and Fs and there are some Schedule D items that the IRS wouldn’t have sufficient info on.
But if all you have are W-2s, 1099s, 1098s, and 5498s and maybe one or two other forms I’m forgetting… yeah, there’s no reason at all why they can’t just do your taxes for you. Sometimes stuff gets not clear cut on exactly when a kid is no longer a dependent, especially if they are getting sizable scholarships to cover college. And the taxation of scholarships and 529 withdrawals and education credits can be a mess.
They WILL essentially do your taxes for you if you screw something up. But if it was in your favor they’ll hit you with interest & possibly penalties. And it takes a loonnnggg time.
The thing that’s harder to automate is state and local income taxes. A lot of the relevant info there isn’t reported on the aforementioned forms which were designed solely for federal taxes.
I think they should send us our return with what they have, and if we know more, then we can add our info.
For most people this could be done easily, and the government knows it. Your tax softwares and such pay the government to complicate things.
Might work for some. But many people share claiming kids. And the IRS doesn’t know who’s claiming which kids in which years.
For several years, I was allowed per the divorce decree claim one of my kids, but I opted to let him claim both.
There are many kid-related reporting details that change year to year.
I think they make it as easy as it can be for folks with simple returns.
Now - mine was more complicated than usual this year. It’s always complicated enough that I don’t do them myself. But 2020 added an extra layer.
I’m annoyed because I filed on 2/14 and it’s still “in review”. Grrr. All I need to round out the year is a freaking audit.
