Annoyed Thoughts: archive 1

I haven’t used the r-word in decades, probably not since at least high school, maybe middle school, and I still find it sometimes on the tip of my tongue. That’s horrifying to me. I haven’t slipped up in actually saying it, and other words that I no longer use but used to even after I stopped using the r-word pejoratively (gay, jipped, I’m sure a few others) never end up on the tip of my tongue, so why that one? It’s puzzling, and shameful.

why is jipped bad again? that one, i could see having no clue that it was offensive.

“gay”, yeah, that’s definitely always been offensive, but somehow was okay to use back in the day. i don’t think i ever used that word though.

i still don’t think that the r word is that bad.

I think it’s normally spelled gypped, stemming from Gypsy. The stereotype being they will cheat you, more or less.

I think it’s actually “gypped”… as in Gypsy / Roma. So pretty similar to “Jewed” other than referring to a different persecuted minority.

D’oh… :ninja:

i had to look up gypsy. i guess that’s an actual nationality of sorts? then yeah, similar to “jewed”.

Yeah, generally you’re talking about the Romani people here, I think. It’s been a while since I looked this up.

So yeah, similar to ‘jewed.’

Not a Cher fan, TIL.

I have to fly on Sunday. To Orlando.

16 students want to come winter camping with me. Buti can’t plan that many last minute. So this trip I said everyone has two weeks to send me a deposit for the costs.

It’s been a week. 2 students have sent the deposit.

The other 14 will all send on the very last day and you’ll still have 16.

Mistakenly thought to have come from Egypt.

Two more weeks of Invisalign and my teeth are killing me.

Probably. Last time we had 8. Then we had 12. Then we had 15. Then we had 12. Then we had 10. All in the last two weeks.
I hate to be hardass, the point is that everyone that wants to come, can. But I have a hard time coming up with vehicles already, once we’re at capacity it’s very hard for me to just find another vehicle (since I’m basically polling the students that are coming to find one’s with vehicles).
One of the students who’s apparently coming, and supposed to be driving, dm’ed me that they’re now not 100 percent certain they can drive. They’re having exhaust issues with their car, and arguing with Dad about who’s paying for it, etc. So now I feel like I should tell him to bring the car out to my buddy’s place and we’ll fix the exhaust some Saturday. Jeez. And I haven’t even started with the food.

Speaking of food, and since I’m killing time on a break, here’s the menu I’ve got planned for the trip:

Sat. Lunch
Lamb and Lentil soup with Frank’s tunisian Harissa
Egg free Naan bread

Supper
Hamburgers and chips

Sunday breakfast
Brian’s porridge.Oatmeal with apple, cranberries, raisins, cinnamon, vanilla, cream, SL’s maple syrup.

Lunch
Lamb gyros
Greek salad

Supper
Mom’s beef stew, dinner rolls. SL’s spouse’s famous butter tarts

Monday Breakfast
Madu Vadu with coconut sauce

Lunch
Sandwiches and halal cold cust

Monday supper
SL’s famous triple cooked fries
Chicken wings
If we catch fish, will also have a fish fry.

Tuesday breakfast
pancakes
SL’s homemade maple syrup.

So we eat like kings, hot meals X 3 times a day. But it takes a lot of planning and prep to get that food shopped for and cooked ahead where possible.

I was gonna make dosa’s but I’ve been told by my one indian buddy that that’s going to be very difficult in a cold campsite.

today’s kiosk salad had really rubbery chicken. was totally gross.

today’s packaged salad had fermented, slimy lettuce. was totally gross.
I threw out the lettuce and ate the chicken, corn, cheese, and tiny southwest corn chips with the salad dressing.
I’m still hungry.

Took the truck to the shop to get a couple electrical things looked after. Mostly fuses I’d expect.
Yeah, no, not fuses. Module this, module that. $1600 to fix some stupid crap that was more of an annoyance than a real problem

My kids are getting boosted tonight. I’m preemptively annoyed at how that will unfold.

I’m preemptively hoping it goes well.

My annoyed thoughts: organizations are cutting way back on vaccination / booster requirements. I had been scheduled to attend an SOA exam committee meeting in person in late January, but policy no longer requires vaccination or a negative test, so I’m only attending remotely. I was hoping to take a small ship cruise with UnCruise Adventures this year (enjoyed a pre-COVID one a lot), but they are dropping any vaccination requirement in April.
