I’m on an upcoming SOA podcast (for fun, not for anything educational), got the advance copy today. My voice is chock full of vocal-fry, it’s so irritating.
Unfortunately, I find it hard to listen to podcasts with lots of vocal fry (which is very common nowadays). The good thing is that you’re aware of it, so it’s something you can work on, if you choose to.
Studies have shown that vocal fry has been a thing for at least decades - it’s just that we police women for it far more than men. I remember a good TAL episode about it.
My voice used to be much higher. It’s gotten a bit lower as I’ve aged, and now I have vocal fry. I used to think I sounded too young before, so if I had to choose between sounding 20 and sounding 35 but with a side of fries, I’ll choose the latter.
I’m a good speaker, and while I wish I didn’t have vocal fry, I have no intention to change it.
Fair enough. In most cases it is fixable but would take some effort and you probably have bigger fish to fry (couldn’t resist )
The cough came back today with a vengeance. I’m not otherwise sick but these coughing fits take so much out of me.
The teachers are officially on strike. They’re going to be picketing near my office, I’m going to drop by and show my support this week.
Also our kids won’t be logging on to zoom school. They’ll be reading and playing outside and being creative at home, but we are supporting the teachers. We are prepared for the consequences, but I really hope it’s resolved quickly and the kids can get back to normal.
Corporate jargon bugs me endlessly.
I don’t want a “light touch” or to “double-click” into anything. I’m not looking to “circle back” on anything, nor do I want to discuss “thought leadership” anymore. Let me do my damn job.
never heard of those first two.
i still have an issue calling actuaries “talent”. fuck that. there is no way it takes “talent” outside of having a high threshold for extreme boredom in doing pension valuations and reading endless regs.
talent is drawing a pretty picture or making music. not doing a pension valuation.
You are too uptight!
No, your body “muscles up” because of the “newness” and fear. It gets easier.
Level set
There seems to be a disconnect between your tolerance for corporate bs and the amount being shoveled into your space, so I’m going to put a pin in this conversation and think out side the box to come up with a proper response that I can leverage. I’m developing a special sauce so that we’re singing from the same hymn sheet and that will be a win-win for all of us. Perhaps, though, we should first pivot and take this offline then after getting our ducks in a row we’ll be able to hit the ground running. I DO NOT WANT TO LOSE THIS DEAL!!! THANKS!!!1
This reminds me of that Weird Al song…
there is a fly that keeps buzzing around me. it would be great if one of the two useless dogs in this house would make themselves useful and murder this fly for me. they are both lazily just laying around though being useless.
I need an excavator/sewer service to connect my sump pump to the storm lateral the city installed. I can’t get anybody to call me back. After four contacts (two calls and two emails) to one of the places, they gave me the number of a different place because they “are booked out through October/November”. Why won’t anyone take my money?
Dogs kill flies? None of my dogs ever did that.
probably not since dogs don’t fly. they kill bunnies.
My dog is annoyed by flies and will try to get them if they get into the house.
We’ve had a couple of dogs that would chase flies. Mostly it’s the cats that chase flies. One of the corgis really liked catching and eating bees and wasps. Never got stung, near as we could tell.
