All the President's Men

Thread to keep track of Trump Appointees and their respective shenanigans.

Good timing.

I was just reading that supposedly Gaetz resigned from Congress to evade House ethics stuff. But also, I guess at least one R spoke anonymously against his confirmation as AG.

We just got through watching the Ds not learn their lesson. Time to sit back and watch the Rs not learn theirs.

Makes me wonder if Trump did this particular appointment as a way for Gaetz to “get out with face”.

I suspect that’s just a happy coincidence.

He learned from his first term. Trump seems to be focused on finding his most ardent orange-nosers that sort-of/kind-of fit the relevant positions.

Maybe but when do congress critters normally resign when being appointed to administration jobs? I didn’t remember it generally being minutes.

Exactly my point. I suspect Gaetz to not survive the Ethics Committee investigation and just resigning w/o some “other” reason will only place that perceived guilt as being factually true.

Not saying that this “perceived guilt” won’t still exist, but Gaetz now has a “legitimate” reason for resigning that isn’t tied to anything “negative”. “I did this so that I can devote my time to prepare for this new role” will be a line he can now use to combat any claims of perceived guilt.

Not saying that this is “smart” . . . remember the general demeanor of the MAGA die-hards (which Gaetz is definitely a member of).

I thought that the House Ethics Committee was supposed to hand over their findings on Gaetz tomorrow. Wonder if they still will or just chuck it all since he has resigned?

(Video within, not text):

The title is slightly misleading – his assessment on Gabbard was actually “worst cabinet-level appointment until Gaetz was announced” – and he draws an analogue to Caligula wanting to appoint his horse to the Roman Senate.

I read another explanation for Gaetz resigning now is that FL law gives the governor 8 weeks to fill the vacancy. He wants the spot to be filled before the new session of Congress opens in January, as it appears Republicans will have a very slim majority - and with other Trump nominees vacating their seats, it will be even smaller.
Is that the actual reason? I have no clue. I suspect it’s a factor, along with avoiding the ethics report. That’s probably the main thing driving it.
I can see him not being confirmed, and then he’s completely out, since he resigned his seat already.
I only hope that other Republican members of Congress don’t bow to the pressure, and vote with their actual beliefs.

Yes, feels like a big favor. Maybe a sign of a backdoom deal with Gaetz, or maybe just a demonstration that he will protect his guys from things like ethics.

Assuming McCormick holds on to the lead in the Pennsylvania Senate race… four R’s voting “no” would be sufficient, assuming all 47 D’s/I’s also vote “no”.

=snort!=

Awesome typo!!

I wonder if the Senate will go on a 2 day recess at some point in January for Trump to make recess appointments of the whole cabinet. Gaetz, Hegseth, and Gabbard could well have dumpster fire confirmation hearings.

So if he resigns now and the Florida Gov appoints a successor but it becomes obvious that he isn’t going to be confirmed (I hope), could he take the seat back in January as the winner of the election?

Interesting thought. It seems to me it would work.

I assume this comment was supposed to be in red font?

No matter what negative feelings they had about Gaetz in the past most such Republicans will fall in line with Trump’s picks.

No, not meant to be red. I can hope.

Yeah, this was my thought. Why in the world would we think this time would be any different than all examples we’ve already seen?
