The big ones are the best. Lots of energy there. I played in a huge team tournament once. Lots of rating variability, it basically one big open tournament. That was a classic where I lost to a 1160 and then beat a 2060 3 games apart.
I think I might need to stop playing online daily chess. I’m losing my mind. My last two games I threw away easy wins. The first I blundered into a opposite color bishop drawn endgame and then he refuses my draw offers. 8 moves later he literally hangs his bishop and I miss it…twice… Other game I am winning big, and then walk into a perpetual check…but then after looking it over I mistakenly thought I was lost and just moved and resigned, instantly regretting it realizing I had a draw after all. My rating has tanked over the last couple months. I can’t figure it out…
Wow, in my now most recent game I missed mate in one…it wasn’t even a tough mate. It was the mate I was looking for a while and I just missed it on this turn. Ended up drawing. What is wrong with me gahh
What time control are you playing? Are you getting yourself into time trouble? If you’re playing speed chess, missing these types of things is not that bad. For instance, I primarily play 1|0, and occasionally 3|0. I routinely have these things happen, but don’t let it bother me, too much.
Oh, I see daily now. Yeah, different story. I struggle with daily and long time controls, because I (a) don’t want to, (b) don’t have the discipline or (c) don’t have the ability to truly put the effort into each move that I can. I treat it them like semi-blitz games. Occasionally I’ll spend a decent chunk of time on a move, but most of the time I make a move in 5-30 seconds. And I find myself making similar blunders, and then getting frustrated. Then I go back to 1|0 and feel better because I’m on an equal playing field with my opponent.
Yeah, I think it’s that I’m not giving each game the time it deserves, and pretty much ignore positional play and just look for a quick tactic. Bad habits. I think maybe too many games at once.
I entered the daily chess championship which has 22 games at once with a 1 day time control. Definitely moved too fast and blundered in some games. Luckily I was the highest rated player in my group so the blunders weren’t always seen and I came back from them, but it is frustrating.
22-0 and moving on to round two. I also had one game with over 99% accuracy which was cool
I typically play 1-0 bullet games these days. Can’t wait for OTB chess to come back
I entered that competition too. I think two of those games I talked about in this thread. One was hanging my queen…happens when not paying attention…woops. The other was missing my opponent moving his bishop next to my king in the end game and I missed simply taking it which would’ve gotten me the win and instead I draw. That one I think my brain is melting down about.
20-1-1 and moving on tied in first place for me.
I sometimes get extremely tilted if I lose a bunch of winnable games playing bullet. Usually I have the good sense to quit, but recently I just played a stupid opening in frustration, planning on losing, but my opponent didn’t punish me immediately and I won as white from this ![]()
That looks fun. I always get excited when my opponent plays something passive / modern and I’m allowed to have c4,d4,e4,f4 with bishops and knights behind each one supporting. I feel like I usually win, but I don’t have a grand plan to crush from that position.
I have been playing poorly. My standard rating is slipping. But more importantly, my 1|0 rating has slipped back from 2000+ down to 1850 or so. Need to concentrate a bit more.
1|0 rating peaked at 2084 yesterday!
In other news, what’s going on in our tournament?
Looks like it’s wrapping up. The top 3 in each group have been solidified as of now. We should start a new tournament as of March 1st. I’ll try to give the rest of the month to finish up games so players aren’t playing too many at once.
We’ll do an A group, a B group, and a C group. A group will be:
Tospeke (@tospeke)
Dzibanche (@MayanActuary
SneekySneaky (IPD)
Minnesotah (does Minne have an GoA account?)
mizizark (@procrastinator)
abstractactuary (@AbstractActuary)
B Group:
CapaFan1888 (does Cappa have a GoA account?)
BruteForce (@BruteForce)
CuriousGeorge0726 (@CuriousGeorge)
1695814 (@1695814)
Thtevie (@Bro)
ROWerewolf (@Werewolf)
Group C will be anyone else that wants to play. Anyone else who has posted in the chat i’ll @ below:
There are other players in the chess.com group that haven’t made it to this thread yet, so I think there should be enough players. Top 2 in each group will promote, bottom 2 will relegate.
I’ll create a new thread specifically for that tournament when we get started. I’ll create the tournament now on the website so that players can have 2.5ish weeks to join.
mentioning the other posters in the thread now:
@YankeeTripper
@Rekrap
@Macroman
If you are in Group A or B and don’t want to play please let me know. I’ll shift players up into the next group in that case.
Thanks for setting this up on Chess.com. I like it a lot better than the old system of trying to track people down yourself and starting matches. I love that you can pop in and see how other games are going too. Overall, a much better experience!
Tournaments have been created and invites sent. I know the chess website’s invite system is a bit wonky, so if you didn’t get an invite then please let me know and I’ll send you a link directly. You can join group C directly here: Login - Chess.com
If you are not a member of the club, you can join here: https://www.chess.com/club/actuarial-chess-club/join/eb5c16
Just making sure you grabbed Devilrox too. He’s good enough to probably be in the A group but I know he missed sign ups on the last go around.
