2026 Winter Olympics (Milano Cortina)

From penisgate to excessive touching, this has been quite the year.

I think I figured out why I don’t like watching Bobsled / Luge / Skelton. It’s because they take 4 runs, and it’s the total time across all runs that determines final position. Very different from, say, downhill where you qualify for the finals, but only the final run counts. Or, say, shotput in the summer olympics, where only your longest throw is the measurement. You don’t add 4 / 5 / 6 throws together to see who threw farthest.

I think I’d like bobsled / luge / skeleton more if there was a bit more at stake in the final run. Usually by that time the top 5 or 6 are known, and they’ve been building up 0.2s or 0.3s buffer each run, so it’s virtually impossible to improve or decline at that point. But if, say, you take the best of first 3 runs to see in the final, then only the final counts for final placing, you’d see some more activity and therefore more interest.

Anyway - what are you watching? My overall favorite is short track relay, 20 people on the ice in controlled chaos is just amazing.

I watch what is on, but not terribly much.

I like downhill

I watch a lot of Curling, I like the strategy

Speed skating - though no idea on the three skater thing

Not too big on the X-Game type sports

As do the Fins and Americans. Exciting hockey

PZ is like me.

I also don’t go for the X games stuff. I also DNGAF about the hockey. the time zone doesn’t help me. curling in the daytime is great for keeping an eye on while I WFH

Had to be an Aussie…

I’m following the curling and hockey. Absolutely loving the boopgate memes.

We always blame jet lag because we (including New Zealand in the we) are a long way from everywhere.

I’ve been digging the Curling also, the strategy is definitely interesting and entertaining but in terms of actual athletics I’m not sure how I feel about it’s relevance. On the other hand, the X-games type stuff seems to involve more athlticism but is less entertaining to me; I don’t generally like things that rely on judging to determine the outcome.

In the past hockey was not even on my radar but I’ve watched the bulk of the men and women’s USA matches. The last few have been nailbiters!

When I was in college I loved the hockey, particularly the bigger rink, less fighting

Usually in a bar on a large screen (didn’t see many otherwise)

Now, I am not taking two hour to watch the game, especially if I already know the outcome

for the curling, can anyone help me understand the early blocks. They don’t seem to do much and not much for any one side

enjoyed watching the Ski Mountaineering yesterday. Very interesting event, but it looked like as long as you were first into and out of the “diamonds”, you were probably going to win your heat. Not much changed in the transitions, and virtually nothing happened in the skiing portion. I wonder if a longer event would have more back-and-forth.

Did not enjoy the overwhelming commercial breaks as part of the broadcast. I get it, they gotta sell commercials to pay for the broadcasts. But, come on, 2 minutes of commercial after every 6 minutes of broadcast was just ridiculous.

I was pretty excited that the Canadian women’s curling team was able to come back from a horrible 1-3 start to win the rest of their games and just make it into the semi-finals. But before I could post, though, they’d already lost to Sweden. So now they have to face the US again to determine who gets the bronze.

Some exciting Canada-US team clashes so far in this Olympics. The biggie for me is on Sunday at 5 am Vancouver time. I expect it may not get decided until late in the 3rd period or in OT so may miss the start.

Is it just me, or does sticking out your tongue while showing your medal just seem classless?

Inappropriate touching or not, Canadian curlers triumph.

slow, polite, rules-heavy, and totally dominated by Doug… very accurate!

I enjoy watching curling, but it seemed like it was on every time I turned on the TV. Would have liked a little more variety in the broadcast.
