2026 FIFA World Cup Discussion

That was my view. I never supported Toronto’s bids for the Summer Olympics as a result. I got tired of the promoters’ “economic benefits” arguments.

I did not support Vancouver’s bids for either the 2010 Winter Games nor the 2026 FIFA WC games. The latter is turning out to be even a bigger financial boondoggle than feared. I am now ok with the 2010 Winter Games though as the additional infrastructure like the airport train was needed and is very well-used.

Was just notified by FIFA that my application in their Random Selection Draw for four “cheap” tickets to the NZ-Egypt match in Vancouver on June 21 was successful. Tickets were about US$130 each. Will decide later to sell them or go.

Still waiting to hear about Canada tickets in Vancouver from the country draw.

Still too expensive.
Tell them you buy them for $50.
That’s what the free market is supposed to allow.

What does $130 get you?

Is it nosebleed seats or something a bit better..

There are no really bad seats in BC Place Stadium but I expect mine will be as bad as they get. I have told my family members they have to reimburse me for any tickets and they have already claimed them. I think people just want to experience the thrill of attending a WC match regardless of who is playing.

Just got notified that my separate application for Canada’s matches was unsuccessful. Those tickets will sell for $ thousands on the resale market so will go to a public venue to watch their matches.

I suggest finding someplace close to BC Place, and keep tabs on the ticket market.

I heard nothing back, so I think I probably struck out.

However, my wife’s bid was partially filled. We’ll be going to a knockout game in good seats.

Kansas City will host tournament matches from June 16 to July 11. Officials expect visitors to begin arriving in the metropolitan area as early as May to prepare for the competition.
Officials are expecting around 650,000 people to visit the region for the event.

Um, there are only 6 matches, and the stadium holds 76K. Only one team (ALG) play twice, the first and last match. In between, the fans of ALG travel to Santa Clara. Meanwhile, I’m guessing half the stadium will be filled with locals, as KC is pretty soccer-happy. So, maybe 300K visitors, and not all at the same time, and about two days for each. Sure, that is better than most summer days in KC. Not a whirlwind, not a potential “disaster.”

Who will visit in May?? Probably some of the teams will camp there, since it is centrally located. So, 200 or so per team.

Also, World Cup matches are in Missouri, not Kansas.

Yeah, but there will be fer’ners staying in KS cuz right next door, and there might not be 30000 hotel rooms in KC, MO.

Especially as it’s Algeria in 2 of the games, so they might have to see brown people.

I probably would have gone if they hosted in Chicago or maybe Indianapolis, but KC is way too far.

CHI doesn’t have a stadium with FIFA-regulation field.

Laws being updated:

Delay Goal Kick ==> Corner Kick to opposition.
Delay Throw-in ==> Throw in to opposition.
Option for Competitions: VAR will quickly check whether ball out is Goal Kick or Corner Kick.
VAR can check whether second yellow cards are correct.

Stupid “daylight” offside being correctly delayed, cuz stupid.

Security issues for matches in Mexico?

I wonder where the backup sites are. Shirley there are backup sites?
They could use some MLS Stadia, the ones big enough for a FIFA-regulation field, but lower capacity.
Guessing people have made travel arrangements. Could turn out to be a Gold-Cup-level shit show.

I’ll be near Boston when ENG play Ghana. Tough to find a hotel nearby, I’m guessing.

I did not get the extra chance

Boston will get federal funding as soon as Logan International is changed to Trump International.
