My grand son at 3 loved the grounds crew

I took my 1yo at the time kid to a game at Fenway. She made it about to the 7th inning stretch and enjoyed everything going on all around until then. And just when I was thinking we’d have to leave, the people directly in front of us bought one of those huge foam finger things. That got us to the end of the game.

Very different experiences for each kid, but my daughter’s first away game was an Orioles game where we sat in the bleachers and had a 2-ish hour game with fireworks. Perfect day to go to a game.

Happy 25th anniversary today to one of the best websites, baseball reference.

Class act all the way:

Yeah, it’s just meaningless pre-season, but it is pretty funny already. 4 games in, the White Sox run differential is already -24.

Don’t peak too early! It’s a long season!

I am more interested to see which Yankees will start sporting well-groomed facial hair

If Pete Rose - who admitted he bet on baseball, and there’s iron-clad proof that he bet on baseball - gets reinstated posthumously, but Shoeless Joe Jackson - who signed a confession that he took money to throw the 1919 World Series and was reportedly plied with alcohol to confess under oath, but his own performance in that WS suggests otherwise and there’s no proof beyond the claims of others who later recanted their statements - doesn’t get reinstated, then fuck Rob Manfred and fuck MLB.

This morning, CHI at home in Tokyo, but playing in their road jerseys. Is nothing sacred anymore??

Homer by Ohtani was not a homer IMO. Fan interference.

Did you get up at 5 to watch the game?

Cubs eliminated yet?

Well, 3 my time. And no. “Recorded” via YouTubeTV.
No way I could watch it live even if it were on at a decent hour. Slow as sports go, commercial breaks are too frequent (at least 17) and too long (2.5 minutes, or 10 15-second skips), and plus pitching changes, which add an average of 7 more breaks (W.A.G.).
Could stand it more in a social setting, but that’s reserved for actually going or W.S.
These guys on Fox suck as announcers, but I had been spoiled by Vinnie for 40+ years.

Surprised no one is noting this at ESPN.com.
Barstool jackasses are on it, though who bothers with them anymore?
And of course the umpires association, or whatever it is called won’t note that the call was wrong. Unlike soccer referees, who are man enough to admit it.

At yahoo, it seems the final call was more about making a moment than correctness:

While Cubs fans might be disappointed with that decision, it made for a great baseball moment. Fans erupted in cheers when Ohtani hit the ball and after umpires confirmed it was a home run. The play was a definite highlight of the Tokyo Series and a reminder that Ohtani is still the biggest threat to take home another NL MVP award.

Like stupid soccer announcers claiming that Offside was called, ruining a great goal. No, the player cheated, which led to the goal.

Another rant from someone screaming in space:

You’d think so from sports radio here. I’d not heard the results of game 1 when I heard the freaked out coverage (I literally heard “can they recover?” from one of their personalities). I assumed they must have gotten clobbered in historical style, maybe with some major injuries, and was pretty surprised to find it was a standard 3-1 game.

I agree with CloseCallSports. I don’t think there was a definitive angle that showed it for sure. The main shot people are using to complain is a somewhat behind the play and that can be particularly misleading on a call like this. The original call was homerun, so the call stands.

The main shot I see is of fans leaning over and touching a ball that would have hit the top of the padding and not the rail.
And, the shitty announcers were fawning all over the technology that allowed a 360-degree view of the game, but that tech was not used for this “HR.” But hey, cool moment for those in attendance and watching. Such desperation from a failing sports company.

Watching the replays on the broadcast I definitely agreed with the “Call Stands” ruling. At first I thought definitely interference, on the second and third replay I leaned homer. But if I’m that umpiring crew, creating a moment and getting out of the stadium alive definitely plays a part in my final decision.

This is the 19th consecutive season where the Giants have started a different player in left field on opening day

What is the LAD magic number? 161 or 160?
Cubs, elimination number the same?
When do magic numbers start being relevant? I mean a major issue is wild card slots, where everyone (except CHI, probably both of them, HEY-YO!) is still in it.

wiki is my friend:

MN(A) = G + 1 - W(A) - L(B), where:
G = games in season
W(A) = wins by Team A
L(B) = losses by Team B.
So, MN(LAD) = 161 for West Division Crown.

Cubs and White Sox should both be eliminated by June
