Last Olympics, it was combined, which I agree does not make a lot of sense. This Olympics they split it into two events per gender. One is speed. Other is bouldering and lead combined.
Brazil pretty much always wins in beach voleyball because they have been playing since they are kids. Many beaches in Rio have beach voleyball areas for public use.
I saw someone ask if there could be a Diamond League event with the person outside of Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone running without hurdles as a pace setter to get her a sub-50 time.
Pace setting in a race run entirely in lanes is really difficult. Maybe the easiest way to do it would be with the Wavelight technology that shows where world record pace is / âaverageâ pace for the world record, but even then sheâs going to be paying more attention to clearing the next hurdle in her step cadence than where the lights are on the inside of the track.
That said, I think sheâs going to break 50 seconds within the next 2 years and then itâs a question of whether she wants to go run the open 400 and go after the steroids-induced womenâs world record thatâs stood for 39 years.
I donât understand why she doesnât compete in the hurdle-less 400 m?
Schedule in the olympics has the 2 events too close together to do both. But she will presumably anchor 4x400 relay. She runs the 400 flat in non-championship situations.
Should be a good race between US, GB and Jamaica. All 3 countries have 3 400m semifinalists (with Sydney making a very handy 4th runner for US). Netherlands could be a dark horse if Femke Bol is within striking distance.
TIL, the sand volleyball courts in the USA are either non-existent or are privately owned, AND they didnât exist before the 1980âs when the sport was invented in Rio.
Oh, and I have been spelling it wrong all these years, too.
I find the menâs and womenâs 4x100 metre relays to be the most exciting events at the Olympics. This yearâs did not disappoint. Most fun since 1996 in the menâs event.
Spoken like a true Canadian.
Noah Lyles is an incredible athlete but he does too much trash-talking. Similar to Mitchell and Drummond at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics before the 4x100 relay. Have to think it fires up opponents to beat the USA (although everyone wants to beat the Americans anyway, I suppose).
Both gold medal basketball games are France v USA.
Not going out on a limb here to predict two gold medals for USA in basketball. Even Canada should have beaten France in the menâs game.
Time to bring Ice Basketball to the winter olympics
Why not? A Canadian (Naismith) invented regular basketball.
Canadians call that Curling ![]()
It is hard to be humble when you are an American. Lylesâ arrogance is an attitude that contributes to our success.
My vote for womenâs soccer MVP is Alyssa Naeher.
The start time for the game seemed unfair. Brazil had the sun in their eyes in the first half, seemed to cause problems a couple times. By the time they switched ends, there was enough shade that it wasnât an issue for the US.
The arrogance seems to be primarily confined to the American sprinters rather than to other track athletes. Probably because there is so much hype about being âthe fastest man in the worldâ. Certainly Carl Lewis was no shrinking violet.
I have no problem with being proud of being the winner of the 100 metres event. However I have found the 4x100 event to be more exciting and unpredictable. You can have the four fastest runners in the event, as the USA did, but good teamwork can overcome that. A slower team like Canada can still win if they pass the baton better.
The USA men should easily win the 4x400 today but I believed the same thing yesterday about the American chances in the 4x100.
