2024 MLB Baseball Thread

Who??

Probably should have moved the whole series to Citi Field, unless something is already scheduled there.

Tigers and Royals both win magic number for both 2 pending Twins game latest.

I wonder what a preseason parley of those 2 teams making the playoffs would have paid out

I saw the story and watched the video. It was certainly a scrum, and the dude may have had his hand on it at one point, but it’s a lot like a loose football - possession isn’t established until the refs clear the pile. The whiny look on the guy’s face at the end is priceless.

3 game winning streak now? really?

The % record is now also impossible. 1 loss in the next 3 still gives the WS the loss record.

The only winning move is not to play

At least the A’s closed out in style.

I feel bad for the fanbase every time a billionaire holds a city hostage for their personal benefit. It’s perhaps even tougher for Oakland after losing da Raidas. At least it’s not far for them to see baseball live now. That’s not much comfort to the die hards.

It was compounded by the fact that the As were the last pro sports team in Oakland.

Yankees clinched last AL division, looks like LA about to clinch last NL division.
Twins collapse is almost complete as they fall in extras to the Marlins

It is interesting that 3 professional sports franchises, with 3 unique owners (I think) all chose to chase the money and left Oakland. Seems like there is something about the city that maybe isn’t amenable to hosting sports entertainment?

I think it is ridiculous that he would even have a say in it

Using that logic, NYC is a terrible market for sports franchises.
Look at all the different teams that left:
Dodgers
Giants
Jets
Football Giants
Nets

The is a slight difference in 1 and 2 vs 3-5 in your example. But chasing money is what billionaires do. Hard to be a billionaire otherwise.

As a kid in the 80’s and 90’s, I was always a fan of Rickey Henderson. He was my favorite for several years until Ken Griffey Jr. came along. We were also huge fans of MC Hammer in the early 90’s. Oakland had it going on.

I think that it is quite probable that the 2024 White Sox winning percentage will end up higher than the 2024 Chicago Bears win percentage.

Bears will have to get to 5 wins to beat the W/S. I don’t see that happening.

Jets & FB Giants are in the same market, same fans
Pretty much same with Nets who also came back

A little different I think. NYC is still home to 4 teams (vs 0 for Oakland), and the recent teams that “left” are still considered part of the NY Metropolitan area (Islanders, Nets, Jets, and Giants).

For Oakland, only the Warriors are still around, though in another city across the bay.

I’m sure Oakland can support major franchises. They just didn’t want to throw away taxpayer money to billionaires to do it.
