2024 European Soccer Championships

Dynamic Pricing will help this.
But, cultural traditions (stereotype alert) result in more walk-ups. Fancy ticket apps discourage this.

For spectators at home this has definitely taken away from the competition. It doesn’t help the CONMEBOL or CONCACAF sides get the respect they deserve in world football either, and it certainly doesn’t suggest that football fever is gripping the U.S. ahead of the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Hey, we’re dumb for soccer, but not stupid with our money anymore. Doubleheaders would be awesome for the money and time IMO, but that won’t happen anymore.

Add to that the fact that the average South American fan would need to spend months or years worth of their salary to follow their national team around the U.S. and you don’t exactly have a recipe for sell-out crowds.

Eh, these events are no longer for “average fans.” I’m guessing that most of the fans of foreign countries going to World Cup matches live right here in the USA, mainly cuz better than where they lived before. They won’t “follow them around.” They will go to the matches close to them. Maybe go to the Round of 32 or 16 if close.

StubHub resale tickets had buyers from 88 countries but over 90% of those were U.S. buyers. Which shows that ticket prices are more in line with an NBA Finals game than a South American football match. Yes this is the Copa América but the reality is that said prices are simply impossible for many fans to pay, especially on top of flights, accommodation and spending money if they are making the trip from South America.

What idiot would arrange for flights and lodging, then go to StubHub for a ticket? These trips are arranged more by travel agents / internet agents from that country. And you don’t go if you can’t afford the package. Them’s Capitalism.

It is difficult to compare the Copa with the European Championships taking place in Germany at the moment,…

I forehear a “but” coming.

but it is obvious that one has full grounds and the other doesn’t. This gap needs to be closed and it will only benefit the teams and tournaments from the America’s going forward if it does.

Again, all this can be solved by Dynamic Pricing, BOTH WAYS! Enough of this, “I’ll set the price, T.I.O.L.I.” I will offer a price and YOU T.I.O.L.I.! You can make them give away tickets for the purpose of breaking attendance records like Barcelona did with their women’s match a few years ago. Or, let the market do its thing, and get ticket owners to swallow their pride and sell at losses instead of eating them

Anyway, FIFA need to focus more on the pitches. Many are too small, and many require a lot more preparation for grass overlays of turf (and some are both). They had better keep on the Billionaires’ asses who operate these stadia, and have a Plan B if they need to abort a stadium from the World Cup (not in Texas, of course!)

Aside:
Just saw in my local rag what it will take for the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum to host both the opening AND the track and field. Easy, cuz already hosted Olympics twice before? Um, no, because they tore up the track, dug down more and added more seats (The Horseshoe did the same thing 25 years ago, removing the track where Jesse Owens broke several records.)
so, they will build a RAISED floor, put a track and whatever is needed for field events on top of that. Below could be used as warm-up and staging areas, maybe a Hunger Games’ style podium raiser.

If you need me to paste, I will.

They did use dynamic pricing for Copa America. Maybe it worked well enough on the high demand games, but they weren’t low enough to entice more fans of teams in the lower demand games. Conmebol said on dynamic pricing: “Overpriced tickets were out of the confederation’s control, he continued, because the dynamic ticket pricing that determines those figures is handled by the ticketing partners at each stadium.”

I agree with this. Most of those fans attending were US residents. The few fans of any nation or club that are traveling vast distances for their team are almost all wealthy.

There was 55,700 at game in Vegas. Second and third levels in corners had some openings. Or it could be those people appeared to constantly be looking for their seat in a lower section rather than sitting high. It wasn’t a sellout but it was definitely well attended.

Should be a good game if they don’t play super defensive football.

We’re probably going to be watching the game at our hotel in Bilbao. Still debating going out and taking the little one with us to watch on a giant screen they have set up (it starts at 9pm over here so its quite late for her).

As expected, the English fans will be in Berlin in great numbers. Tomorrow should be a fun day for soccer viewing.

I was all set to sit down and watch the third-place Euro…

Wow, I hope the average ENG and ESP fan can afford these tickets:
/s

Approximately 35,000-40,000 England fans are expected in Berlin despite an official allocation of only 10,000. The game is a sell-out but some resale websites are offering tickets starting at around £1,700 each.

10,000 seems pretty meager for Euro in a centrally-located country. Stadium holds over 74K.
These days, people can buy via their FA finals tickets on the condition that the team makes it. refund if not. All electronic. NHL teams do this: you have to reserve your seat for all possible Stanley Cup games, 16 home games max. I know the LA Kings don’t even charge the credit card until a game becomes necessary, but they do it immediately.

I would just say there is a lot of pent-up demand by English fans to witness a major championship win by their team.

I know it is a step down from Euro but there is a consolation Copa match today which I will watch.

Perhaps you have a team that you are rooting for?

I always cheer for the underdogs. :canada:

I hope Uruguay wins. If not, then I can say our favorite expression here during winter …

Blame Canada! Blame Canada!

Maybe if somebody accidentally spilled some poutine on the Uruguayan family members during the game it might result in a couple of red cards.

Nice to see Marsch went with a lot of the young players to give them some international experience. They have played well.

Champions!!

Spain nets the winner in the last 5mins. Well deserved 2-1 victory over England.

Huge “Ole’s” all over Bilbao tonight.

Spain is now Euro champions for a record fourth time.

I wonder if any Spanish players will get a kiss on the lips when they get their medal.

Viva España x2 since Carlos Alcaraz won the Wimbledon finals.

I don’t really see why Southgate had to resign. He has done better than any other England manager. The real issue is that the media and the fans in England have completely nonsensical expectations about the national team, but this issue has actually improved over the last few years from what I have seen. There is a bit more realism about what to expect on the ground when you play against other world-class teams.

Sounded like it was his decision. 8 years is a long time and he did a fantastic job. Best record since Ramsey. 9 knockout major tournament wins in 8 years versus 6 in the previous 50 years (since the World Cup 1966 win).

Every year is getting shorter, never seem to find the time
Plans that either come to naught, or half a page of scribbled lines
Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way
The time is gone, the song is over, thought I’d something more to say
