That would at least be an improvement
I think that game might get ugly as everything would get packed in.
But if they added a foot to the 3 point line and eliminated the corner 3 by having the 3 point line intersect the side lines, that would reduce a lot of the 3 point shots where guys just hang in the corner waiting for a kick out.
Certainly that would make for a more animated commissioner…
Rugby has a similar point system -
Win = 4 points loss = 0
Score 4 or more tries (touchdowns) = 1 bonus point
Lose by 7 points or less (one score game) = 1 bonus point.
If this had applied to the NFL bills-rams game from the previous weekend, bills would have got 2 bonus points even though they lost.
Applying to NBA, perhaps 60+ non-3 point points could give a bonus point or finishing within 10 points.
Weren’t they supposed to be adding 4-pt and 5-pt zones? For the Curry’s of the league association?
ala Harlem Globetrotters?
Or North Korea
I’d like to see them add 10 feet to the width of the court and have the 3 point line not reduce in the corners. Adding more distance could be used as well. But then the defense would have to guard closer to the guy hanging out in the corner. It would make it much more difficult for the defense to guard the perimeter and the block. Now a guy can double the guy in the middle and still close out on the 3 point shooter.

The problem is that if you can back up a few feet to shoot a 3 it makes it very difficult for the defender to help out on defense.

Probably need to push it back far enough that defenders say, fuck it, go ahead and shoot, i.e., the success rate is about 25%-30%.
“Problem” is that some of these shooters are very good even at that range. Maybe not all of them.
Idea: Add a “sixth defender”: a designated player who cannot cross center court line. That would certainly help with stopping breakaways.
The 3 point should ideally have the same or only slightly better expected value than a 2 pointer. When you have people shooting 35% from beyond the arc then you need to be able to shoot 50% from the field in order to have an equivalent 2 pointer.
