2024-25 NBA Thread: Doc Rivers Finally Wins Again (Something Useless)

Congrats to the Boston Celtics, who will presumably come back to defend their title. First things first, they’ll have a parade through Boston on Friday to celebrate the 18th title in franchise history, ending what will then be a nearly historic drought of 2,060 days since long-suffering people in the Boston area were able to experience a championship parade of any kind, that one being the Boston Red Sox win of the World Series in 2018.

This is the last year on TV for Charles Barkley, he says he’s retiring after this season. We might as well take time occasionally in the thread to honor his work. Otherwise, I’m sure there’s burning questions we’ll ask and maybe answer. Or maybe not.

Now what am I supposed to do??

Oh, yeah: look up the last NE Patriots Super Bowl win…

It ain’t like we’re curing cancer or anything, we’re watching basketball. Charles Barkley

Have I got a thread for you , Mr. Barkley.

I assume he’s retiring in order to focus on his golf swing?

I always wondered, is he an objectively good analyst or did TNT capture lightening in a bottle with the chemistry on that set?

Was there analysis?
I don’t normally watch any studio stuff in any sport. And I don’t watch NBA.

Meanwhile, I wonder what Shaq thinks of Porzingis wasting his summer away in rehab instead of waiting for the season to start since that is when he gets paid?

He definitely gives his opinion on NBA matters and sometimes that show, and Barkley in particular, can shape the narrative around what the basketball discussion is. Exhibit A is the Kevin Durant and the bus driver take:

Charles Barkley may be retiring but Charles-Barclay is still going strong

JJ Redick used to knock down 3s at Duke. Now he gets a chance to knock down Ws as head coach of the Lakers.

Hey look, the Bulls just traded away a great defender guard for another guard that’s bad at shooting 3’s!

Not to worry, they still have Lonzo Ball who’ll they’ll pay almost $21.4 million this season to occupy space that’s not “on the floor of the United Center playing for the Chicago Bulls” while he likely rehabs from yet another injury and surgery.

Then his dad will probably want to make him the showpiece of a new super basketball league for has-beens, Ball’s Big Balls Basketball, exclusively for pro athletes with the last name of Ball and guys under 6’2" trying to reclaim their lost athletic supremacy who never played basketball above the high school level and never averaged double-digits in high school.

If I didn’t have a tag line for the thread, I’d have one now: Knicks - Title or Bust.

So, “Bust” then?

Everyone expects to see Bronny James drafted at #55 tonight by the Lakers, because he really isn’t good enough to be drafted but the Lakers will do anything to please and appease LeBron.

The Celtics draft at #54. If I were them, I would take Bronny just to get LeBron for a season or two just to make Red Aurbach’s ghost smile.

They could have simply ransomed the pick for a better pick next year. LAL dumb enough to take it.
They just want to make some kind of trivial history to make the prima donna happy.

Apparently when you say “we’re matching that offer” it sometimes means it’s not a “true match.”

Which non-shockingly leads to this:

Charles Barkley isn’t happy. His farewell tour may get even more lit.

We haven’t caught this up for a little while.

Charles Barkley won’t be retiring. Which, if I had 7 more years on my contract at about $30 million per, I probably wouldn’t retire either.

Steph Curry signs a 1-year extension with Golden State. $62.6 million to play in 2026-27. Not his farewell tour yet, but something to watch. Now to see if Steve Kerr gets extended for '26-27 as well.

Joel Embiid gets signed to a 3-year, $192 million extension.

Good news (for Joel): he’s now guaranteed $299.5 million through the 2028-29 season.

Bad news (for Joel): the Sixers are still going to underperform and never come close to winning a title throughout those contracts.
