2023 US Government Shut Down

“The debt ceiling should be thrown out entirely,” Trump said.

Oh sure now debt isn’t and issue. I wonder why?

This is stuff straight out of the robber baron stage of US history.

Now that the GOP has dismantled checks and balances we are in trouble.

And in the other thread the progressives are the bad guys.

Haha. Thankfully, I missed this song in the ‘70s. But now it is also in my head for the rest of my life.

Rasputin and disco: what a toxic combination!

Historically eras of great income inequality have come crashing down with a recession and/or revolution. We have been in an era of increasing inequality since the 1970s so the clock is ticking.

I wonder if anyone told Musk that the new, Republican majority Congress will be sworn in on Jan 3.

I doubt he cares. If Trump’s name isn’t on the bill then Trump can’t take credit.

But it sounds as if it might not be approved without some Dem votes?

It wasn’t, and Democrats sure as hell weren’t lining up to save it.

So much winning already.

The 2nd CR systematically nuked anything that Musk considered pork, and among the things that it killed was $190 million in funding for pediatric cancer research. There may well be reasonable arguments for making the cuts, and even for the specific things cut, but it doesn’t seem like 24 hours is enough time to make rational decisions about what should and shouldn’t be cut.

I am encouraged that the Republicans didn’t just fall into line behind Trump/Musk. Their power may not be as great as they think.

It’s fair since he pretty much stole a month from Biden.

In a properly functioning Democratic Party, Democrats would be buying ad time all Sunday long blanketing the airwaves, pointing out that Republicans wouldn’t vote to keep the government open by voting against a bill they designed because President Musk told them to vote against it. They’d underscore it by pointing out all the things that had been agreed to by Republicans that would benefit Americans, that then got stripped out because President Musk told them to take it out - and then they still voted that.

Instead, what you’re going to hear are crickets while Republicans blame Democrats for shutting down government by not voting for a bill to keep it open even though Republicans voted against it as well.

Just keep emphasizing the President Musk part to drive Trump crazy.

So Trump wants a debt ceiling increase so that he can offer his tax cuts on day 1? IIRC these tax cuts are what made him contribute a lot to the federal debt coz his tariffs never generated as much income as he projected.
