2023 College Football Discussion

I loved that BYU Coach Sitake used the VAR sign to get the refs to review a play. He ended up losing the challenge, though there was one earlier in the game he asked for a review on but didn’t get it which was much more obvious that they would have won the challenge on.

It will depend heavily on whether he will fess up that someone on the staff (probably defensive) was receiving the intel.
If they were smart, they covered their tracks, used late-night exchanges at empty bus stops and shit like that.
And, what are the consequences? Will they have to forfeit games and their Big 10 titles?
Has a similar insidiousness to the Astros, IMO.
I mean, they will have to prove somehow that the intel was actually used in a game.
Astros had a garbage can being banged during the game.
Does a defensive player in college football have a headset?
If not, then a lot of the defense would have to memorize the opposition’s signals. That is a lot of people who have knowledge. It will get out eventually, cuz someone will want the publicity or use it as blackmail.

Also, probably getting paid extra by some alumnus.

As I understand it, the rule that was violated is from the 90s, and is their for financial reasons. NFL teams don’t have it b/c of headsets, and much expectation is that college football will go that route in the future. So arguably a dumb rule, but really looks like Michigan violated it. Whatever penalty they get won’t be enforced until 2024 season, I don’t know why.

  1. Child who’s a Marine: “All in his own name? Yep, sounds exactly like something a Marine would do.”
  2. Same child: “Legit impressed he bought tickets to 11 schools. I figured he’d buy for 10 schools and then believe he’d covered them all.”

At this stage of the year doesn’t it always look like there will be 5 undefeated teams and we always end with 1 maybe 2?

There will likely be 1, maybe 2 this year. No team really has a real clear path. Hoping Michigan wins out and never leaves news for cheating, GA loses in SEC title game, OU gags, and Fla St loses to Miami or Florida. Would be good to see UW make playoff. Hoping for carnage down stretch everywhere.

Saw an article that said a Fox sports guy tweeted (X’d?) that Caleb Williams should not play another College Football game. Claimed he won’t be playing in whatever Bowl USC goes to, so why play anymore games?

Well, we all agree it is a violent game. We all agree that is is safer not to play than it is to play (we are hazard experts, after all).
Why play for free and risk getting hurt, and what is the payoff?

I bet there are a few private QB coaches who would drop what they are doing (high school QBs a couple of hours a week, Free-Agents, etc,) and take him on full-time.
“Oh, he’s a quitter!” No, he is a volunteer who has decided not top volunteer anymore. That’s what volunteers do when the benefits are not worth the costs (risks).

Trying to look for NFL practice squad rules: is he allowed to sign on to a practice squad? I assume there is some rule against college players quitting to join practice squads, else we would have seen someone do it already.

that definitely hurt christian mccaffrey’s stock and future potential, right?

I assume Caleb Williams has a hefty insurance policy in case of injury, of course paid for by NIL money.

Heck, one of his NIL “contracts” might stipulate he actually plays football for the college. But I doubt it does.

Another wrinkle for QB’s: reps matter. It can be complicated to make quick reads on routes, coverages, and defenses, and reps under fire provide valuable experience. See Trey Lance as a recent example. Skipping a meaningless bowl game is no big deal IMO, but I don’t discount game experience.

A few seconds early perhaps, but OU doing the gag thing. One team down.

I guess some of us are still trying to figure out the traditions of our new opponents as we join a new conference.

Yesterday at his news conference, BYU coach Kalani Sitake, said he was looking forward to hearing the WV fans sing “Take Me Home, Country Roads.” Problem is they sing that after a win. :face_with_raised_eyebrow: :scream:

This Michigan scandal isn’t dying down anytime soon.
On the Central Michigan sideline for the CMU-MSU game in September. In the “Team Zone,” which means he received a special pass to be there, possibly from a partisn UM person on CMU staff.

Completely unrelated: UM beat MSU 49-0 on 10/21.

This seems pretty petty:

College football coach has nothing more important to discuss than his players’ theft?
Pretty sure they can get reimbursed, assuming they can prove exactly what was stolen. Insurance will probably cover it, and a security guard (or the whole security team) will get fired. Why the whole locker room isn’t locked during the game is a mystery to me. Why stuff is not locked in lockers in the locker room is a mystery to me.
Why cameras, normally turned off when players are undressing, are not on when it is empty is a mystery to me. Why someone doesn’t check how good the security is before leaving valuables somewhere is a mystery to me.

Just saying, a lot of people and companies and organizations are at fault here.

Discussing it shows support for his players. If he brings it up next week, roast him. The locker room shouldn’t be robbed and the players shouldn’t have to file insurance claims. UCLA or security should pay for it quickly.

Have you been in a non-high school locker room? There aren’t doors on the lockers. They are open spaces. Mystery solved on that one. Guard should be outside door or in room. Agree there.

Yeah, DTNF. Do you know what it’s like to be kicked, in the head, with an iron boot? Of course you don’t, no one does. It never happens. Sorry, DTNF, that’s a dumb question … skip that.

Watching Michigan - Purdue, and Purdue just got hit for 30 yards of penalties on one play. Don’t see that every day. Roughing the passer, plus after the play unnecessary roughness, both get enforced b/c one is during play, one after play.

Looking forward to the B1G deciding it can’t punish Michigan because it lacks jurisdiction, followed by the NCAA bringing back Mark Emmert to excuse Michigan’s actions on grounds that while Michigan did indeed gain an unfair advantage and it was probably a violation of NCAA rules, other schools could have done the same thing and chose not to do so and thus it would be unfair to punish Michigan for something other schools didn’t take advantage of.

That would immediately be followed by Emmert deciding to fine Penn State $50 million and take away another 150 of Joe Paterno’s wins, just for old time’s sake, and then slapping Hofstra University’s football program with 5 years of probation and the threat of the death penalty for being a no-show for games since 2010.
