2023 College Football Discussion

My college position coach’s son made his first start today for BYU.
Sadly, he did not have a great game.

Minnesota loses in classic gopher fashion to…illinois? Bret bielema has never lost to the gohpers.

The big10 west is led by iowa who outscored NW 10-7 at wrigley in the battle of who could care less.

That division is awful

Washington/USC game was wild. Both offenses were on fire. At one point USC had 3rd and 1 from WAS 30 and instead of just running for the first down they threw a long pass. Didn’t make it so they go for it on 4th and 1. Easy run for the first down? Nope, long pass to the end zone for a touchdown. It was ridiculous.

Unfortunately, i did not start watching until the the final minute of the 3rd quarter.

Huskies looked completely dominate for that quarter+ that i saw. Clearly that was not the case for the first three quarters, or else it would not have been 42-42 after three.

I expected about 100 points from that game.
Williams is slippery!
USC Defense made everyone on Dub look slippery.

And USC fires their defensive coordinator.

Funny timing, after giving up 52 points to the #5 team in the nation, but not 41 points to CU, not 41 points to Arizona, not 48 points to the now #21 ND, not 49 points to Cal.
Someone needs to hone in on Defensive talent in the portal. (Though, all teams do.)

Clearly 50 points was the cut line.

They just don’t have the personnel. Not as if a new DC will transform this defense. Need to steal players via the Portal, get some alumni to throw NIL money at them.

But, do we see that many defensive players transferring? It’s usually the offense players who are not getting the reps or the O scheme doesn’t suit them and their future dollars.
If players won’t transfer, then USC then has to work harder on recruiting. Again, I look outside and it will be about 80 degrees today.

New twists in the Michigan Signgate. My advice to the investigators would be the same as Deepthroat’s advice to Bernstein and Woodward, “Follow the money.” That seems like a lot of money being spent on college football tickets for a guy making a measly $53K per year. I have other thoughts on this article but will hold off on those till I have more time.

That amount is only what he officially earns.

Does he get NIL money too?

There is speculation about the Big Ten suspending Harbaugh for some games. As a Michigan fan who thinks Harbaugh is a good recruiter and a terrible game day coach, I worry that a judge will intervene to stop that from happening.

coaches get paid by a lot of other pools of money. so if his stated UM salary is $53K, he could get paid booster money, money from some throwaway radio segment (that he contributes to somehow, perhaps in an unseen way), etc.

the NCAA used to hammer a school for “lack of institutional control.” Now every major coach has a salary from the U limited to what the U president makes (in many cases) but some other side corp/group/entity pays them a multiple of that.

If you make $1M from the U and $5M from the booster slush fund, does one really think you are more controlled by the U or the slush fund folks?

so that phrase is mostly dead i think now.

I thought that I read that the highest paid state employee in most states is a coach at a public university. I’m pretty sure those amounts reported are the amounts the university pays directly. Yes, I know that they are paid quite a bit from other sources but I’m not sure whether those amounts are donated to the school for payment to the coach or paid directly to the coach.

And didn’t he start as an unpaid person on staff and worked his way to the paid position he now has? I wouldn’t be surprised if that amount is pretty much all he makes for the level he is at. Low level assistants are notoriously underpaid and most struggle to make ends meet which is why it can be so stressful while getting into the coaching profession.

I still say follow the money. Someone at the school beyond him knew what he was doing. That may not come out for years like the Fab Five. But one day it will. Following the money like those original 'gate guys did would probably uncover that quicker.

Gonna guess it is someone under the DC.
Offshore account or paid in cash.
Could get him for tax fraud if he’s not declaring the income.

… stop the steal?

Michigan is crying saying the B1G commissioner announced the penalty of suspending Harbaugh today because it’s Veterans Day and the courts are closed so Michigan can’t get a judge to issue an injunction.

Washington Huskies are always entertaining.

Utah must have some affect on defenders returning pick sixes. Oregon did the same thing a few years ago, but that time the ball ended up bouncing into the end zone and the Utah guy picked it up and returned it for a TD.
