When I visited Helsinki some years ago the Finnish immigration officer noticed that my passport was issued in Vancouver. He smiled, stamped my passport and asked me what I thought of Sami Salo who was then playing for the Canucks. Only time I ever discussed hockey with a foreign immigration official.
Never watch opening or closing ceremonies, or the ice spectacular thingy, did the druggy participate?
I watched curling but it is 2 hrs and I don’t care if not US, enjoyed it but too much.
didn’t watch any hockey. There was no good story there
Don’t enjoy the X-Game sports or mixed doubles slalom racing. Way too much of that
When I went on I saw some bobsled, but never saw any of the other sledding, was it on?
Even the downhill skiing seemed to be focused on the failures, rather than building up the events
The key skaters all seemed to go after I went to bed, and the IOC blew that big
A bit of Nordic stuff, but I got bored
They had 2 channels worth of sports. CNBC seemed to stop covering. There had to be more games going on, but I went to sleep to ski half pike, and it was on again in the morning. It just seemed poorly covered. NBC at 8 was just too much talk
And why would they bid on Olympics and Super Bowl.
I don’t think your experience was unusual. Anecdotally my impression was there was less interest than usual. I think the only event I personally got excited about was the quadrennial battle between the USA and Canada in women’s hockey.
I expect NBC ratings will be bad. In Canada, more people may have been watching the coverage of the truckers’ occupation on CBC News than the Winter Games on CBC.
There are a lot of great events at the Winter Olympics but I found it hard to navigate the different Peacock channels to find something to watch. The time zone difference was certainly a factor. Prime time was terrible and the night when they said Nathan Chen is coming right up and it took four hours or so, put me off watching the rest of the Olympics. I must admit I was saddened by Mikaela’s difficulties, confused by Eileen Gu’s decision to represent China and maddened by the Russian coaching teams treatment of their 15 year old superstar ice skater (I hope they raise the age for entry next time).
Highlights for me were Hirano’s amazing 3rd run after being short-changed on his 2nd run in the halfpipe, Erin Jackson’s win in the speedskating and Nathan Chen (after staying up for hours) doing his magic.
Summer olympics is a lot easier to get my head around - swimming in the first week and a half with round games of sports like basketball, soccer etc. and the last week and a half is taken up by track and field and playoffs.
I love the winter Olympics. I love to watch figure skating. I love to watch alpine skiing. I enjoy a hocky game once in a while, and I like to catch a little biathlon. And I was really surprised by how much fun it was to watch snow board cross. That’s a great spectator sport that I didn’t know existed. Will watch again.
The whole drug circus dampened my enjoyment of figure skating, but I saw a lot of it before the news broke. And there was some really super dancing this year.
But as an event, yes, this year’s Olympics fell flat. The time zone hurt, as did the politics.
She claims that by representing China she feels she can do more to encourage young people to take up the sport. Which is probably true, but hard for the rest of us to ignore the geopolitical stuff.
They bid on both so they could package advertising packages. They wanted both, and by having them both they were able to get full Olympic advertising packages by guaranteeing better ad placement in the SB.
Oh you don’t want to participate in the Olympic advertising campaign? Your ad will be playing early in the 3rd quarter, enjoy bathroom break time. Oh, full two weeks worth of commercials? You can expect your ad to be played early in the first half. Enjoy watching your QR code float around for 30 seconds!
I watched A LOT but that’s just my (and my family’s) nature. We watched a lot of curling, many of the action sports, I got way too into biathlon for two days, one of the cross-country races had an incredible ending (for a boring ass event). But as an Olympics lover this year definitely seemed blah and the coverage did nothing to build up suspense for anything other than Jamaican bobsledding. I don’t blame anyone for not being hooked this year.
i watched a bunch. don’t dig the x games stuff. (although I like the part where they race eachother) I like races in general more than the artistic stuff.
but it was a low energy watching and broadcast schedule. i saw more on USA than NBC and I lack the energy to look for more of the stuff in the winter.
for dtnf, i am not even sure it is over. will wait and see if it is on later. if not, then i suspect it ended!
Yeah, Closing Ceremonies were on last night where I was dining with family.
Was a little surprised that the CCP didn’t require the gates locked and no one to be let out until everyone recited “We Love China! We Love the CCP!”
'cuz, that is what they do.
In another article I read he said that’s the second time he’s had that happen to him in a competition. I think after the first time I would make sure that it never ever happened a second time
Wondering what it is about him and his.. that makes it more susceptible? Too much perspiring perhaps? Not enough insulation? Not enough circulation?
We also don’t know much about other competitors’ ailments, as they might not be publicized.
