There’s a weird gap in the US legal system in which you have to be below a certain income level to qualify for a public defender, but the amount of money you need to pay for legal representation is realistically quite a bit higher. A federal judge recently dismissed a bunch of cases without prejudice because the defendants were not able to secure counsel.
I was being satirical. Former Prime Minister of Canada John Diefenbaker was heavily criticized early in his career for defending an unpopular defendant.
Diefenbaker continued practising law. In 1951, he gained national attention by accepting the Atherton case, in which a young telegraph operator had been accused of negligently causing a train crash by omitting crucial information from a message. Twenty-one people were killed, mostly Canadian troops bound for Korea.
However, in the US attorneys are generally permitted to pick and choose their cases (aside from those assigned to them through public mechanisms such as might be used in the public defender system in some states) even when the potential clients can afford to pay, assuming they don’t engage in discrimination against protected classes in their declinations.
So, look for some rent inflation where rent control isn’t. How much of the NYC market isn’t rent controlled?
Mods, thread title needs to rhyme.
“You’re a moron, Mr. Zohran”?
That doesn’t rhyme. I was going to suggest “get a brain morans” but looking up the pronunciation, it’s apparently zo-run.
You can’t out run Zohran?
Zohran won’t be outdone?
“HAH! I got him! Fixing potholes is a SOCIALIST activity!! Using Tax dollars to better the community!@!@”

The first of Mamdani’s city-owned stores now has a location.
He asked for $70 million in funding for 5 stores, but it’s costing $30 million for just this one - and that’s with it being on property that is already owned by the city, so there’s no rent to factor in. Clearly, the budget wasn’t well planned out.
I’d like to know, how will the store be funded to make it more affordable? Is it tax dollars going towards subsidizing the costs? If it is, will they make sure that only necessary foods are sold there, and not junk food?
Clear?
Let’s say the underlying logistical infrastructure was $20m. Add on another $10m to set up the retail space. That would be pretty clearly on target, no?
Without the capex versus inventory, we will get nowhere on any basic analysis.
It’s been reported that the first store was a full ground-up construction, while the remaining stores are planned to be integrated into existing structures.
Here’s a trash right-wing tabloid that explains this: Staggering 8-figure sum NYC taxpayers will pay to fund Mamdani's first city owned grocery revealed
State-backed housing insurance scheme.
Sounds like it’ll be great for those lucky enough to have a gvt subsidized place and result in less supply for everyone else as those people never move and the incentive to build is (marginally) constrained.
Lol, NYP being how it always is.
Did he give a Terrorist Fist Jab too?
Mamdani probably isn’t popular in parts of Texas either.
