It means you must use the “positive” info you have.
- Once a space is green, you must keep that space green.
- If you have a letter yellow, you must keep using that letter somewhere.
BUT: if you got a yellow for A in fourth position, you may use A in fourth position again, satisfying the requirement to use A.
Second BUT: if you got a miss for A in fourth position (so no A anywhere), you may use A again, in any position.
I haven’t made enough blunders to be positive of that, but that’s my impression of how it works.

No. Perhaps I should be. But if you have been told there is no A, you may still guess A in any spot, including the spot you were told it does not exist.
This is how Wordle describes hard mode
Just as a test, in a different browser, playing in hard mode, I just entered a word that gives no hits as my first guess. Then I tried the same word as guess 2. Allowed.
Then to test my first BUT, as guess 3 I tried my guess 1 from today. As I was sure it would (unless there are two words in play, I got a yellow in position 5.
As guess 4, I tried another word with that same letter in position 5. Allowed (and of course yellow again).
Then as guess 5, just to confirm I was really playing hard mode in the second browser, I tried guess 1 again. Not allowed with message “Guess must contain E” the letter that had been yellow in guess 3 and 4.
Technically, the message was “Guess must contain O”, one of the two letters that had been yellow in guess 3 and 4.
Anally, I tried a guess which repeated the new yellow from guess 4 but not the yellow from guess 3. As expected Not allowed with message “Guess must contain E”
ARRGH. I’ve just ruined my perfect record (always in 1) in the second browser. I’ll go back and finish it so that I still have a 100% solve rate there.
ETA: Double AARGH. My old “solved in 1” is not in my stats there. Maybe it was from before NYT took over.

I saw a gecko last weekend
oooh, okay, i think i got it. so if you find out that a letter doesn’t exist in the word, you can still use it. that’s the part i was unsure of. also if a letter is yellow you have to continue to use it and can use it anywhere, including where it was yellow. if it’s green, you have to use it in the same green spot.

W4 was an attempt to find letters, not possibly the answer (moved the Green letter in W3 elsewhere). then i was left to sound out what I could from the few letters left.
After 50-60 tries each, my english average is 4.17 and my french average is 4.23 if you count a fail as 7 attempts. (There were three french words I didn’t recognize)
