Only partially insures no screw up. Or if that means “ao fan doesn’t screw up” maybe it works. But here, with 3 yellows in guess 1, I screwed up and repeated one of those yellows in the same place in guess 2. Hard rules don’t prevent that kind of screw up. They also don’t prevent you from reusing a letter that you know can’t be in it, something I’ve gotten better at on my own and didn’t do today.

ah, i only tried the hard mode switch once. i didn’t realize it doesn’t protect against everything. i’m confused. what does it make you do in that case? just put the green letters in the right spot? it prevented whatever screw up i was going to do today. i forget what that was though.
If you have a green letter in a spot, you must keep using that letter in that spot.
If you have a yellow letter in a spot, you must keep using that letter somewhere (including the place where you know it is yellow, not green)
But: if you have a blank letter, so you know it does not belong anywhere, you can use it anywhere you don’t have a green.
One thing not covered by what I wrote there, and I don’t know the rule: suppose you have in the same guess a green E and a yellow E. Do subsequent guesses have to keep the green E plus a second E somewhere? (or if you have two yellow E’s in a single guess, do all subsequent guesses need to use two E’s?)
I"m wondering if, on average, I wouldn’t do as well with hard mode. You can get stuck on one of those where there are a bunch of possibilities, but I think more often I go to letter elimination on earlier guesses without putting in enough time to see the possibilities and miss guessing the answer early.
I always try to guess the correct word. It’s more fun for me that way. Feels too much like sudoku the other way. Bo-ring!
as always, ymmv
I like sudoku…

Funny, I did the same thing today which may have cost me a turn. Now my 5s are outpacing my 3s.

I switched up my 2nd word to try to discover letters & it worked out - had all 5 letters after guess 2, with only one way to make a word out of them.

Took a shot at a double-letter word in guess 3 but that left me with a pretty clear choice on guess 4.
