Will you get the vaccine as soon as available to you?

Similar to a stroke for this type of blood clot, I think.

I am taking an estrogen supplement that probably has a higher risk of clotting. I knew about the risk when I started taking it, and have no plans to stop it.

I suppose you need to look at the cost benefit. The cost seems pretty low. (a tiny risk of a very bad outcome.) The benefit is that you might have been vaccinated today and will instead need to wait… probably several more weeks to be vaccinated. So several weeks of additional exposure to covid. I’m not actually certain what the risk analysis is there.

My son was scheduled to get J&J today. I suppose he won’t have that choice. But if he did, I would have advised him to go ahead with it.

I think the first symptom is a bad headache.

These clots are dangerous, but can be treated. It’s probably worth checking with your doctor if you have any symptoms in the first two weeks after getting it.

My sister got a bad headache from J&J but I think it went away. Was immediate, not 2 weeks later

6 in 7 million, just seems crazy to challenge the confidence in the safety of the vaccine on such a tiny frequency.

Agree that the frequency of blot clots seems pretty low to call for a suspension. Have there been any cases reported in males worldwide? Seems like they could reserve J&J for males only at this point.

One of the symptoms you’re supposed to look for is leg pain. Well, ummm I’m going to physical therapy for leg pain and it has been really bad lately. I’m going to assume that’s not related to the J&J vaccine though. :grimacing:

Yeah, you know what’s normal for your body. “Congestion” is one of the possible symptoms, but I have environmental allergies. I always have a little congestion, particularly in spring and fall

If they can determine a link between female hormones or birth control I’m sure they’d revise their recommendations on who should get it, but they need to draw that conclusion first. It’s a frustrating situation and hopefully they can get it resolved soon.

if it resolved already, I wouldn’t worry about it.

Okay, scratch that. I’m a hyochondriac. I’m sure I WOULD worry. But that’s not a rational fear.

Me too with the allergies, and if I wear a mask for a while. Some side effects won’t be distinguishable for some people.

I think the count of side effects with J&J is low, but you also have to consider development/reporting lag. I think they are concerned that it may be part of a larger iceberg, especially considering AZ/Oxford experience. There are some age groups of otherwise healthy people that the trade-offs might be worth pausing J&J, especially if other alternatives are available. The messaging does need to thread a small needle though.

Right? If we took a basket of any 7 million women in the world and monitored them for blood clots for 3 weeks how many would be diagnosed? I don’t know these numbers, but I would be pleasantly surprised if it was only 6.

This reminds me of a study we did on some expensive osteoporosis drug at Humana a year ago. We had 100 or so people on drug X and 200 or so on drug Y. Drug X is way more expensive than drug Y. We monitored members on both drugs and 5 (5/100) of the people on drug X had fractures in that year and 11 (5.5/100) of the people on drug Y did. Of course drug X makers thought this was plenty of reason for us to pay the multiple of drug Y and transition everyone over to drug X.

Do you even Chi-Square bro?

chi square? that just sounds like gamma with extra steps

never heard of a gamma statistic though.

This is a very unusual sort of blood clot, though. It accompanied by very low platelet count, and is exacerbated by heparin, which is often used as emergency treatment for clots.

In fact, I am reading elsewhere that the purpose of this pause isn’t to prevent people from getting the vaccine, but to make sure that doctors, and especially emergency rooms, are aware of it and how to treat it before they recontinue distributing the vaccine. If so, the communication wasn’t great, but that’s a very plausible story.

Yeah, we have enough trouble with convincing everyone the vaccines are good without going hunting for any risk. If everyone worried about every risk they face with a ~ 1 / 1m probability we’d have a long list to worry about, and probably have a lot more vegans

If so I think they should have done it quietly. Vaccine confidence is a delicate thing, you can end up doing more harm than good due to reduced utilization.

You can’t do that quietly. Everyone scheduled to get the J&J jab will know they’ve been delayed, and word will get out. And pulling the vaccine with no explanation would surely lead to conspiracy theories.

But if that’s the reason, I think they should have included it prominently in the initial news release.
