None of them should have gotten it yet. Elected officials shouldn’t be eligible for any reason until the jurisdiction they represent has vaccinated everyone else that wants it.
My brother is an elected official and where he lives they qualified to get it early. They wanted elected officials to get it as a sign of confidence in the vaccine or something. Idea was that more of their constituents might get it if the elected officials had it. ![]()
My brother has a high-risk child so he was very happy to get it.
I think they should be eligible in their priority category. If an elected official is over age 75 you think they should be required to risk getting covid until every single other person is vaccinated, including a 20 year old with no risks at all?
Cuomo supposedly waited to get vaccinated until his age group was eligible in ny even though he could get it sooner as an elected official. That seems reasonable to me, not for him to wait until the end
I think the appropriate response depends on the constituents. Cuomo’s constituents are likely less vaccine-hesitant, so I think it showed good leadership for him to wait until his eligibility category came up.
An elected official from Trump-loving Podunk, Ohio would probably be showing better leadership by being an example. I’m willing to trust the government and get the vaccine, it’s safe for you, too.
I think that running the country, in close quarters to others, daily, is “essential business.” Even if they don’t get shit done.
I’m willing to classify it as “non-essential” & send them home, without pay, until all businesses are allowed to open.
Just typing the word “allowed” there made me throw up in my mouth a little.
That sounds a bit extreme to me.
This seems more reasonable:
For example, I’d be fine with Dick Durbin getting his with the other 70-somethings before it’s opened up to 60-somethings, but, for example, AOC being front of the line, as a healthy 31(?)yo, makes little sense.
This isn’t exactly how I’d describe my bother, but his constituents are probably majority Trump supporters, although I’m not positive of that.
That said, 3.2 million New Yorkers voted for Trump. I suspect there are plenty of vaccine skeptics among Cuomo’s constituents.
ah, yeah, that makes sense. i think it helps cuomo’s approval rating to have waited.
those people didn’t vote for cuomo though. they hate him. so, cuomo getting the vaccine is not relevant to their decision whether to get the vaccine.
True, for the most part, but there’s probably a few exceptions.
i’m not sure. isn’t there skepticism among minority groups? AOC getting the vaccine might persuade them.
i’m not so sure. cuomo is very polarizing these days. also, a person who voted trump at this point with 4 years of that horror, but still thinks trump’s my guy almost definitely does not like cuomo or respect his opinion.
i do know trump voters who got vaccinated. i doubt cuomo’s views on it made that decision for them.
That’s a good incentive to volunteer, and I approve of that bonus.
KS announced yesterday that everyone 16+ is eligible starting Monday.
My daughter is home from London for another week then goes back for two more months. I was thinking she wouldn’t get vaccinated until she came home for the Summer. But I jumped on the phone and web looking for a J&J jab.
Seems those are going to the more rural areas. First place I found was 5 hours away. I’d have done it. But then I found another little podunk pharmacy about an hour and a half away near my brother. So Wednesday will get her jabbed and have a nice dinner with my brother. win/win!
With her in London, it’s got to be great to have her vaccinated.
Yes! I was sure she’d have to wait until June.
I’ve heard J&J is less effective but at least it’s some protection.
Would she have been eligible to be vaccinated in the UK?
J&J was less effective at preventing symptomatic covid, but it’s the only one that’s been explicitly tested against the South African variant, where it did an excellent job of preventing hospitalization and death. That’s great news that she can get it.
I Believe I read that J&J was very effective at reducing the risk of severe illness and hospitalization. Even if it’s not quite as effective at reducing the risk of a minor case of COVID, severe illness is the thing to be concerned about anyway.
It’s not an apples to apples comparison though, because J&J was tested after the new variants emerged.
It’s like saying “I was warm in Minneapolis last May and cold in Houston in December. Therefore Minneapolis is warmer than Houston.”
