ok, sort of selfish, but when I ran a blood drive I always wanted to donate the Double Red (even though not optimal for my type). because it counted as two units in our tally
My daughter called and they had another appointment 15 minutes after mine, so we both donated today.
I don’t think I’ll ever go back to the double red just because when it goes wrong, it really f***ing hurts, and then they throw the blood away because something went wrong. Sticking with whole makes it far less likely (impossible?) that I’ll be in pain and my donation turn out to have been worthless on top of it.
I’ve had a problem happen with whole before and they had to toss the blood. Only the once, though.
I don’t get queasy or lightheaded with whole blood or platelets, but I always black out when I do a double red. Three tries, no more.
I am O- and CMV- (good baby blood). I used to donate regularly to the Children’s hospital here. I always knew when it was going there because there were 4 smaller bags attached to the bag I was filling.
Makes me sad that I can’t anymore.
My (blue) state just announced the plan for the forthcoming months:
This Friday: Removed limits on outdoor gatherings, dining, and events. No masks required outdoors for gatherings less than 500. Bars can go back to closing at 2am (from 11pm).
5/28: All indoor/outdoor capacity/distancing limits end.
7/1 or when state hits 70% of 16+ vaxxed: Government mask mandate ends. We are currently at 59%, so guessing we will hit 70% before 7/1.
About 3.5 hours post exam and I’ve got vaccine round 1 done
Here’s hoping that you passed your exam and create lots of spike proteins and engulf them with dendritic cells.
One dose or two? I don’t think any state has hit 59% fully vaccinated, yet.

This gives % of total population, not of 16+, but Maine is in the lead, with 42% fully vaccinated. If you estimate perhaps 80% is 16+, that only gets you to 53% of the eligible population.
(several states have more than 59% of the 16+ population with at least one dose.)
Thinking this will be 7/1, or later.
Wouldn’t be shocked if the slow down continues.
Thinking more, this would require am additional 11% I’m the next 3 weeks or so, and then hope that the percentage J&J > percentage skipping their second shot…
I am not holding my breath
It’s just one shot.
It’s one shot, so I’ll play the optimist that we get there with a week or 2 to spare.
I really do think that there is a decent chunk of the population that just don’t have the means or ability to go searching for a shot and I think having walk-ins available at Wal-Marts and Targets will get a decent amount of people.
So, your state guidelines are that the government mask mandate will end when 70% of those over 15 have had at least one dose of vaccine? (Or 7/1, if that hasn’t happened)
There was so much emphasis in the media around here that it’d be hard to find an appointment and you might have to wait, I wonder how many people still think that’s true. Once they opened it up to everybody, it was never hard to find an appointment. That message needs to be constantly repeated.
Correct
Well, we obviously have no chance if actually reaching herd immunity, which probably needs 80% of the total population to have immunity.
But i suppose if half the population or two thirds has immunity, the incidence will drop a great deal.
I wonder how many parents will get their tweens vaccinated when (if) that becomes possible.
Yeah, my husband waited a couple weeks longer than made any sense because of that. Of course, hour didn’t catch covid in that time, and probably won’t until he’s had a chance to get the full course. So it’s probably fine.
I looked to schedule an appointment yesterday and it was basically open to get it whenever worked for me if I was willing to drive up to 15m, so got it about an hour after scheduling
I was considering rescheduling my 2nd shot to somewhere else to save myself the 30 minute drive each way. But, after trying to find somewhere that 1) offered Pfizer and 2) allowed you to make 2nd dose appointments if you got #1 somewhere else, I realized I wasn’t actually going to save a significant amount of time, so I’m keeping my original appointment.
