I’m going to be the first in my family to get the vaccine, whichever variant it is.
(part of this is because I really want to get out of my house AAAAAGH)
Bon has serious anaphylaxis from certain allergens, D can’t communicate fully, Stu is on chemo, and Mo is still a minor.
But, as per that other thread, I’m way behind in the priority list. But it is highly unlikely that anybody else in my family will get the vaccine before me. I wonder if my parents will get it before I do (my step-dad isn’t even Social Security eligible yet! My ma… is a bit older.)
I think I remember reading somewhere that some people were having trouble with COVID due to overactive immune responses. Is there a correlation there with people with severe allergies? I haven’t heard about the latter.
The only thing I’ve heard is that folks with asthma might have increased risk of severe COVID symptoms. Nothing about allergies specifically. Though having a child who totes an epi-pen around I’m not exactly eager to put that to the test.
I do fear that this is going to frighten people who were on the fence about getting the vaccine into not getting it.
And of course any highly allergic pro-vaxxers are now out.
So yeah, this will have a negative impact on uptake. In the first few months when there are more people wanting the vaccine than there are vaccines it won’t really matter because the limiting factor will be the number of vaccines, not the number of people willing to get them. But over time the limiting factor will be number of people willing to get the vaccine and this is an unfortunate development.
I hope that Biden can and does enlist the help of George W Bush to spread the word about the positive benefits of vaccinations once we get to the point where there are enough vaccines for everyone who wants them.
Where is Mike Pence on vaccines? I wonder if he can be an ally in this regard.
it sounds like based on what i’m seeing on MSNBC that after the initial vaccination of the most at-risk in the coming weeks, the next wave won’t be until like June because the dipshit president turned down enough vaccine for the rest of us, so the US is now last in line to get it, even though I think that a NY based company is making it. Sort of confused by this though since it is a NY based company making it, but that’s what I’m hearing.
MA just publish a timeline for our state, where they are estimating April-June for general population distribution and March-April for high risk general population (elderly, other illness that impact COVID death rates, etc)
A lot of what’s being manufactured is being made in Germany, by BioNtech. That’s where the stuff being distributed today in the UK came from, I believe. They are also manufacturing in Belgium, and an article a while ago says their US capacity is from Michigan, Massachusetts, and Missouri. I hadn’t read that they were making it in NY.
Pfizer plans to draw on sites in Kalamazoo, Michigan, and Andover, Massachusetts, as well as St. Louis for the early stages of its mRNA vaccine ramp-up.

Through its existing mRNA production sites in Mainz and Idar-Oberstein, Germany, BioNTech is able to produce mRNA for commercial supply after having already produced the vaccine candidate doses for the clinical trials. BioNTech will also increase its manufacturing capacity in 2021, once a third site in Germany will start manufacturing to provide further capacities for a global supply of the potential vaccine. Critical to distribution in the U.K. will be Pfizer’s manufacturing site in Puurs, Belgium, one of Pfizer’s largest sterile injectable sites. The Puurs site is being used primarily for European supply but will also serve as back up supply to Kalamazoo, Michigan, for the U.S. market.
And it looks like Moderna is making its vaccines in Switzerland and New Hampshire.
In contrast, Moderna, a biotech firm with nothing like Pfizer’s manufacturing base, has contracted with Lonza, one of the world’s largest pharmaceutical services firms, to produce much of the mRNA active for its vaccine, mRNA-1273. Lonza will make the active at its complex in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, and at its main site in Visp, Switzerland.

it was likely to happen today regardless. But the Dems who don’t want to take it had fears of the government forcing through something not properly tested.

What I’ve read is that they planned to authorize it tomorrow AM, but trump pushed for TODAY. The difference won’t make any difference in timing of vaccine distribution. But trump gets to say, “look, I’m powerful” and maybe scare some people away from getting vaccinated.
I heard something similar although I think the first batch might be a little larger than what you’re suggesting. But yeah, then nothing for a while until the manufacturer fills other countries’ orders.
