This isn’t really my sort of thing, but for others who might be so inclined: The YouTube channel “The Dusty Wheel” is hosting a live watch party of Episode 8 tonight (12 October, 9pm EDT) with Brian Sanderson (who finished writing WoT after Robert Jordan passed).
gawd I hate art-by-executive. Maybe part of the issues with shows tapering off 3/4 of the way with mediocre rushed finales is due to the 8 episode limitation? Nah, it has to be audience fatigue.
Caught up through season 2 and read through most of this thread. I think you all captured my biggest issue with season 2 (the rush of the zero to hero; how, exactly, did Matt learn to fight while imprisoned?). But it was much better than season 1.
This makes me sad I was hoping he would be in S3 since all the forsaken have been released now.
There were 13 Forsaken from the Age of Legends in the Books, but the show downsized to only having 8.
If they’ve got Logain teaching Rand, it’s easy to make Asmodean one of the ones cut.
I see, I hadn’t realized they’d made that change (or I knew and had forgotten). I’m bummed that swordplay isn’t a bigger part of the show. As a kid that was one of my favorite parts of the books. Overall though I thought the second season was better than the first, so we’ll see what we get for season 3!
So WoT is a fantasy series with all the flaws of GoT season 8’s overly-rapid storytelling and missing details, but with hardly any of the sex, nudity, dragons, good acting, good directing, gorgeous women, and only a portion of the violence.
Someone on Reddit shared a video of Rafe, the showrunner, teasing S3:
https://www.reddit.com/r/WoTshow/comments/1791iyr/rafe_teasing_s3/
He confirms that Rhuidean and Tanchicho will be seen in S3 and mentions that Tanchicho will be portrayed with a tropical setting and interesting costumes. In other words…it’s consistent with Book 4.
I plan to rewatch season 1 in January and season 2 in Feb so that I have it all fresh when season 3 comes out. I was lost a bit in season 2 without a rewatch on season 1, and season 2 had too many unexplained details
Season 3 trailer is out.
It may be worth noting that after some expensive disappointments, Amazon is reportedly waiting to see how S3 does before they decide whether to greenlight S4.
If you want to see/hear someone obsessively geeking over the trailer, the WoT Up guy has released his dissection – I haven’t yet gone through that one-hour video to know the extent to which he spoils the books. (He does warn about spoilers…) There are/will be other content-creators who do the same.
EDIT: Yes, there are spoilers, both from Books 1-5 and in the form of discussing leaks from S3. Not a surprise, but worth mentioning for those who care. (E.g. a darkfriend is identified as such.)
EDIT2: WoT Up guy’s video has some sound quality issues, but it is watchable. And I am reminded that while I really love the Wheel of Time series…there are folks who are much more hardcore fans than I ever was.
There are always more hardcore fans I’m always amazed when I look at Sanderson stuff online, some of these people have dedicated some serious time and mental energy to this stuff.
Thanks for linking the trailer! I’m excited for S3. I need to start rewatching S1-S2.
I’m excited. I’m far enough removed from reading the first several books that I don’t really remember the details and can just enjoy the show for what it is.
Rings of Power was terrible. Wheel of Time the past seasons were great.
Season one was rough, due to some of the constraints Amazon imposed on the showrunners and the pandemic.
Season two was much better, although the final episode suffered some of the problems of the first season.
Scuttlebutt is that the metrics Amazon looks at haven’t been that great for the WoT show, with fans rebutting by pointing out the limited marketing effort (as compared to the total production budget) probably contributes to the disappointing results. Amazon, to its credit, seems to at least be doing some marketing for S3. Between that and hopefully a good screen experience…
Agreed, and Ditto.
I think spoilers are unavoidable. Either you read the books and you know what’s going on, or you havn’t read the books and you need to ask someone who has read the books what the hello is going on, because the show is skipping a s#!t-ton of detail on what the heck is going on.
Without the help from the book readers here, there are too many groups of “bad guys” (antagonists) to follow what conflicts the good guys are supposed to be working against
The guys in white
The main devil guy that’s coming that everyone’s afraid of (Ishamael - except wait, Ishamael is just a lesser devil not “The Dark One” ha ha bait-and-switch !)
TheREALDONALDTRUMP TheREALDarkOne
The forsaken / Darkfriends (im not even sure if these are the same)
THe red ajah
The black ajah
Those women with the collars and leashes
But at least Moraine’s back with here T1P swirlies this season, and I’d bet my bottom cuendollar that she’ll be using those swirlies real soon.
For those who might be interested (and perhaps interested in helping boost numbers so Amazon will greenlight Season 4…)
Link: Wheel of Time Fan Event
The probable opening scene for S3 is out.
I’m pasting the link where I just saw the premiere here; not sure whether YT will change it for general release. It’s obviously/arguably a spoiler. Due to violence, I wouldn’t watch this on a work computer / in a work environment. Also, if you’re working through S1/S2 for the first time and don’t want to be spoiled…don’t watch this.
Quick summary: When the Black Ajah revealed itself in the books, we only saw an after-the-fact mention to the chaos and death. Looks like the leaks/rumors that this would be the opening scene for S3 are true.
Just saw S3E1 in the fan event.
Damn.
Some folks are going to be upset at further deviations from the books, but it looks like they’re doing an excellent job of telling the general story.
