What are you reading?

WOT book 8 has been sitting on my nightstand for a couple months now. I’m somewhere in the middle of it. Nothing’s happened.

I finished Troubled Blood, the 5th Cormoran Strike book by Robert Galbraith. If you liked the others, you’ll probably like this one. A plus is that he’s moved the relationship between Cormoran and Robin just a bit. A minus is that Cormoran’s sibs keep bugging him to go to a party for his dad. It seemed obvious that his dad was ill or dying and it seemed really dumb / inconceivable that Cormoran didn’t realize that.

I’ve got a couple Agatha Christie books next. The first is And Then There Were None. I’ve seen at least a couple film versions, but haven’t read the book before.

Actuarial Fairy Tales

it’s cute.

Finished The Madness of Crowds and then Angel of Greenwood which was for book club. Started Brené Brown’s Atlas of the Heart for another discussion group but that one may be only a chapter a week.

Started *The Cape May Garden *by Claudia Vance. It’s more of a novella but also a series. My sister was interested in these since she was born there. I bought her the first 3 which I imagine we will pass around among family members. Then I got the first on Audible. If the rest are this short I will probably just wait until it’s my turn to read them. So far it’s not bad and it will be fun to talk about these with my mom & sisters.

That did not happen. I’ve been a bit slow the last few weeks, even with some vacation from work. After Agnes Grey, I read the LotR (Fellowship, Two Towers, Return of the King) back to back to back. I’m still just 1/3 of the way through Perdido Street Station. I’m also 1/3 into Sword of Destiny (the 2nd Witcher novella collection), started The Silmarillion (1/4 through) and started The Light Fantastic (Discworld book 2). Yeah.

I’m about 1/2 way through Iron Gold (4th book of Red Rising series), then got Old Man’s War for Christmas to get through, and after that I think will be Weapons of Math Destruction.

I’ve read that.

Just finished Winter’s Tale by Halpren. Wow that was long. Six of my holds piled up whi?e I was reading it.

It was interesting how a bunch of disparate stories were brought together. The author had a very artistic way of describing scenes. That said, it could have been half as long and better.

Oh! I just remembered that I have a book on hold at the library that I need to pick up today.

I don’t remember what the book is, just that I have it on hold. :tfh:

Just finished A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas after seeing the 5th book voted #1 fantasy of 2021 on Goodreads. Seemed like a cross between YA fantasy and a cheap romance novel. I don’t plan to read other books by this author.

Also finishing up Klara and the Sun which was highly recommended but I found to be quite meh.

Top 5 books I read in 2021:

  • Norwegian Wood - Haruki Murakami
  • The Wind up Bird Chronicles - Haruki Murakami
  • Orphan Master’s Son - Adam Johnson
  • The Count of Monte Cristo - Dumas
  • Shantaram - Gregory David Roberts

I enjoyed it at times, but the plot was overall… incomplete? to me. I liked the narrative voice.

I’d misplaced And Then There Were None, so I read Partners in Crime, a collection of Tommy and Tuppence short stories by Agatha Christie. It was OK. I’ve never read a Tommy and Tuppence before. There’s some humor in the book of them trying to act like other mystery novel detectives, but I didn’t get many of the references and they never maintained a detective throughout a story. Oh yeah, but there was also extra humor when the mystery novel detective being impersonated is from another Agatha Christie story.

I’ve started And Then There Were None.

Read one Tuppence, no idea what the title was. Much lighter than I am used to

Read And Then, 45 years ago, seen two or three films

There aren’t that many Tommy and Tuppence novels, I don’t think.

And then there were none is my favorite of hers, of course.

Most likely, Postern Of Fate, the last one

Got my copy of The Dawn of Everything today. It’s a thick orange hardcover book with red font.

When i went to pick it up there was another copy in the store that someone else had ordered in, making two big thick orange books side by side in the reserve section. I guess I could have waited around to see who was picking it up and plan to meet up with them later for notes.

I finished And Then There Were None and it was good. I’d seen a couple movie versions but not recently, so I had a general idea of what to expect but didn’t know exactly what was going to happen. She did a fairly good job of getting across the increase in tension across the book.

I’ve got one more Agatha Christie - The Secret of Chimneys, which is the first Superintendent Battle book. I don’t believe I’ve ever even heard of him.

How do you like those? I’ve enjoyed the TV series, and wondered if I would like the books.

I don’t like Tommy & Tuppence.

And Then There Were None is one of my faves.
