Not old school but I’m reading the Expanse Series that the TV show was based on. If you’ve seen the V series it followed the books somewhat closely as far as I can tell. At least 2.5 books in it does. It’s a good Space Opera if you’re into that kind of thing.
You can find my “Reading List for Life” that I published on LinkedIn. Lots of various recommendations: Reading List for Life
If you’re just throwing darts at a board and have no idea what to read, it’s hard to go wrong by taking a look at some of the awards.
e.g. the Nebula Awards: Nebula Award for Best Novel - Wikipedia
Like, the Murderbot stories aren’t for everyone (the tone won’t mesh with everyone) but I enjoyed the series.
Finished these three in the last couple of days. Started reading (and halfway through) Assassin’s Apprentice (first book of Robin Hobb’s Realm of the Elderlings). Queued up The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon, then will likely read The Hobbit, book 1 of my Dragonlance reread (Dragons of Autumn Twilight), and book 1 of Tad Williams’ Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn ‘trilogy’.
In the middle of the first Rivers of London book by Ben Aaronovitch… ok so far
I’m reading The Dawn of Everything, which is fascinating and a good read.
Back to silly Christmas books. This one is by Fern Michaels: Santa Cruise.
Read the newest installment in the Awaken Online litRPG series. Just as much fun as the previous 8 books have been.
I just finished I Know This Much Is True by Wally Lamb. We watched the show last year and my daughter got me the book for Christmas last year. Just got around to finishing it. I wasn’t a fan of the ending.
I’m now reading a book about the Dallas Cowboys. My son got me the book for my birthday is September.
The joke is that it took me almost a year to read my Christmas book, so now I have until September to finish the Cowboys book…
I also have a 2-volume set of collected W Somerset Maugham short stories that I read once in a while. Picked it up at an antique store for like $7. I really like his writing, read most of his novels. Thing I don’t like about him is that he detests the writing of Chekov, who I think may be the best short story teller of all time. Agree to disagree, I guess.
Fifty pages in and I’m hooked (and it’s book 1 of 4!). Some elements of Jorge Luis Borges and Italo Calvino that I’m enjoying.
After this, I’m going to reread The Hobbit and I’ll probably read Lord of the Rings over my winter vacation [along with the other listed books].
I liked it. Now reading the second in the series, Moon over Soho. It’s got jazz!
The Prophet by Khalil Gibran, after a break where I didn’t read much for about a week.
Santa Cruise was a fun diversion. Needed editing, but I might read this author again.
Just started Mr Dickens and His Carol. Thinking about getting a hardcopy for hubby. A Christmas Carol is his all time favorite.

But really, the best gift is socks
My December plans:
I’ve never past book 1 of WoT before, this time I think I will. I’ll read book 2 (The Great Hunt) this month. I’m thinking I’ll read one a month going forward.
I’m currently reading The Shadow of the Wind (33% through it) and loving it. I went ahead and bought the other 3 books of the series and will read one a month. I’m also rereading The Hobbit and will reread the Lord of the Rings in January and rewatch the movies in February.
I started a reread of Discworld in November. I’ll probably read 2-3 a month. Next up is The Light Fantastic (#2).
I started the Death Gate Cycle in November. I’ll read one a month. Next up is Elven Star (#2).
I want to start Tad Williams’ Osten Ard series (I’ve never read them before!). I’ll read The Dragonbone Chair this month and try to read one a month.
I want to continue the Raymond Chandler Philip Marlowe books; next up is The High Window.
I want to continue the John le Carre George Smiley books. Next up is The Looking Glass War.
After these, which should take me past December, I have Jane Eyre queued up.
Along with the above mentioned series, in 2022: I’m going to read 1 of The Realm of the Elderlings each month (next up: Royal Assassin), one of the Dresden Files (next up, Fool Moon), and I want to start Raymond Feist’s Riftwar Cycle (first: Magician). I also want to start re/reads of Matthew Stover’s Acts of Caine series, Joe Abercrombie’s First Law series. Completed series I own and want to read include Fonda Lee’s Green Bone Saga, RJ Barker’s Tide Child trilogy, K.J. Parker’s The Siege trilogy, Swati Teerdhala’s The Tiger at Midnight trilogy, and Dan Simmons’ Hyperion.
Ignoring my Kindle, I have about 2.5 years of reading material at 200 pages a day, not including books that are part of the above mentioned series that I haven’t yet purchased.
I haven’t updated my wish lists in a while. I should do that.
I have 389 ‘saved for later’ items I need to delete or move to wish lists.
Yeah, I should switch some stuff over to “save for later” instead of wish list. Some of the items I had to remove, because I had actually bought them already and forgot I put them on the wish list… because I really use it as a shopping list.
I liked it a lot (Powers and Thrones by Dan Jones, about the Middle Ages). It filled in a lot of the blanks and showed how one thing led to another and affected adjacent regions. It was relatively short for a book covering 1000 years, just under 600 pages, so missed some topics I may have been interested in. For instance, he spent more time writing about slavery in Ancient Rome than serfdom in medieval Europe. That being said, I did like how he set it up with a couple of chapters on ancient Rome and neatly transitioned to the various barbarian cultures and the Byzantine Empire.
