Just finished A Gentleman in Moscow, which is probably my favorite book I’ve read this year. Highly recommend and I’ve added Amor Towles other 2 books to my reading list (Rules of Civility, Lincoln Highway).
Wrapping up Hyperion and still on the fence of what to read next.
I finished The Bullet that Missed. Wonderful book, this entire series is extremely fun. I’m now reading Wrath by John Gwynne. It’s the last book in the Faithful and the Fallen series, it’s likely to end up as one of the best fantasy series I’ve ever read.
our district has sexual health curriculum that names body parts (actual names) and defines them as private, what is inappropriate, etc. I should say age appropriate down to young ages.
and that got us protested by right wing people for encouraging being gay or other nonsense. these folks alleged the curriculum was harming kids, that they were being “abused” by learning it from the school. and they chose to not air the specific concerns of abuse for 4 weeks when they could live stream that they were alleging the abuse to the administration and kick off a shit storm of nonsense.
so while I agree with you, people like these fucking people prevent some places from engaging like our district did.
Probably quite different from your book. But… I know someone who was molested by her father as a teenager. She is one of the sharpest, wisest, perceptive, most educated people I know, surrounded by family, teachers, professors, a spouse… It still took her something like 10 years to fully realize what had occurred. He used some emotional tricks to make her feel like it was okay, or different, or special or something. And her brain did a lot of heavy lifting in making her literally forget.
if you remove “probably” and “to some extent” I’d agree. I was there and the focus of their insincere and uninformed bullshit.
totally uninformed and not actual parents in the district. only reacting to things they “heard” and when corrected did not accept that what they “heard” was not accurate.
they would have only been happy if gays were bashed as “immoral and wrong” and no one informed the students of anything related to sex other than “ask your parents” and that doesn’t check the box you mentioned for informing students of things to protect themselves.
I just finished the 3rd book of Red Rising trilogy. It was worthwhile. Set over 700 years in future where all the planets and some moons are settled and the hierarchical society is ripe for rebellion. Worthwhile, about to started next trilogy.
Red Rising has been on my radar, but I just started the Sun Eater series instead (based on what was available at the library). Finished book 1 Empire of Silence, which is an interesting story but I’m not sure I’m invested enough to spend 6 more books of my time.
Also finished The Picture of Dorian Gray. Really enjoyed this one and it’s a fairly quick one to get through at ~170 pages.
Just started Brave New World and Ulysses yesterday. Ulysses is going to be an absolute beast to get through.
next genre - Fantasy. I have a bunch of Maguire from my daughter. Looking to mix it up, justvread Wicked, but not much else other than Shakespeare (witches and such) or other prose or epic poems with similar elements.
Anyway, settled on Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister - Maguire
I finished reading The Jakarta Method which discusses the various Cold War atrocities committed by the United States, which reached genocidal numbers - millions of deaths.
Turns out there’s not much separating us from the Soviet sphere of influence we tried to destroy.
I finished Wrath, now I’m reading A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles, due to the recommendation from somewhere earlier in this thread. There was no wait for it at my library so I lucked out.
