That’s technically next on my list too, but I might sneak in Huckleberry Finn first. I’m not sure if that’s required reading for James or if not, if it will enhance the story.
I haven’t read Huckleberry Finn since I was a kid. I don’t think it’d be required reading, but maybe.
Next genre - Suspense and Thrillers - You Only Live Twice (Bond) - Fleming
Okay, I either need to reread Huckleberry Finn or talk to someone who knows it well, because there was a part I did NOT remember (and would be surprised if it was).
I think " James" adds some plot points not in Huck.
I read the original once. Meh. Buddy trip. Not unlike On The Road. More like Road to Nowhere.
I liked James, it was good. I don’t think it was Everett’s best book (Erasure is great) and didn’t feel like a ‘best book of the year’ level book, but it was good.
heh, not gonna update my current reading anymore. It’s a mess.
Re-visited Ulysses finally (finished the 4th part last night). Reading it much more slowly and using an annotations book after each part.
Currently halfway through Canterbury Tales (in Middle English) and understanding most of it.
Needed a SF fix so started Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir. Excellent. Hard to put down.
Oryx and Crake by Margret Atwood. My daughter had it for a class last semester. About halfway through it, it’s odd.
It is odd but worth reading all the way through. She has an incredible sense of humour.
Then it is worth continuing onto the other two books in the series.
He’s got a new one about Malcom X.
I’m annoyed this isn’t available as an audiobook via Libby.
Project Hail Mary is coming out as a movie in 2026, starring Ryan Gosling, so that might be an option. The Martian translated into a good movie.
I was also disappointed to see that. I’ve read in a few places that this is one of the few books people recommend the audiobook over actually reading the book.
For anyone considering reading the book, don’t watch the movie preview… it gives away a massive spoiler.
I thought the audiobook was excellent.
on a Graham Greene kick right now
just finished the Third Man
now into The Heart of the Matter
(already read Our Man in Havana a while back)
Just read Project Hail mary for local library book discussion. Im not that into movies from books. The book was okay. 3 stars of 5. Fine writing, but in the end requires too much suspension of disbelief and has a whole hell of a lot of “and then everything worked out exactly as planned” that just irked me a bit wrong.
I actually thought a lot of things didn’t work out as planned in Project Hail Mary. There was one unexpected crisis after another to deal with.
I don’t know want to put any spoilers here so would just say the ending was not at all what I expected.
So just finished Project Hail Mary. I thought it was good but not as good as other contemporary sci-fi such as The Expanse series: those books were exceptional.
There are enough crises in the book to make an exciting movie. It may however appeal to a limited audience unless it is less nerdy than the book.
