Is that the one with incest?
Yes.
Rereading Light from Uncommon Stars by Ryka Aoki, this time for book club.
I haven’t read this one yet, but the original David Copperfield (as with most Dickens novels) I know quite well, so it would be interesting to me how his young adulthood is dealt with (before first marriage).
Of course, one of my fave characters in the original book is Mr. Micawber, but also Aunt Betsey & Mr. Dick. How Dickens dealt with his cognitively disabled characters was always interesting.
You absolutely should. I believe it tries hard to mirror every character from the original, on top of being a kickass book.
ok, I’ll add it to my ginormous reading list…
[I’m doing In Praise of Folly, by Erasmus, right now… so that’s good for a laugh]
Haven’t been reading as much this year but just finished The Heaven and Earth Grocery Store. Decent story, fantastic characters. Really enjoyed this one. Just picked up Deacon King Kong per @Ling recommendation.
Re-reading Bad Monkey to get ready for the new Apple TV show.
I almost didn’t read Deacon King Kong because it was an Oprah book club book. I try to stay away from her picks. But someone told me it was good, so I read it. I really enjoyed it( don’t tell Oprah).
Whenever my mom tells me I’d like a book she’s reading, I automatically assume I’ll hate it. Every once in a while tho…
I finished House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski this weekend. I’m not really sure what I read. I followed the main story well enough but I’m not sure what I should take away from all of the footnotes.
next genre, Historical Fiction.
The Women - Kristin Hannah
I believe it is a China Beach story, focused on Vietnam Nurses
“Legends & Lattes” and “Bookstores and Bonedust” by Travis Baldree, two cozy fantasy books following Viv an Orc adventurer. The first is when she decides to retire from adventuring and open a coffee shop, the second is back early in her career where she gets injured and left behind to convalesce is a sleepy coastal town.
Cabot Cove?
, but no. There is a murder in the 2nd one and she is reading a mystery so maybe a bit of inspiration there, who knows.
Not sure last time I posted here.
Finished a biography of Andrew Jackson recently.
Picked up Infinite Jest. I WANT to be able to read this book. I learn a lot of new words, many archaic. But I just cannot get into it. Walls of text. Stream of consciousness, um, streams. Walls of streams of consciousness in dialect/colloquialism/accent, etc.
I think this requires a depth of commitment I am not prepared for. I did not pick it up for all of its accolades, but I can understand many of its criticisms.
I got a book from the thrift store about Douglas McArthur. Written in the 70’s so it’s less narrative-driven as many biographies these days are. More William Shirer, recounting of events type of book. Just started, so jury is out.
Also am reading The Ickabog by JK Rowling. I’m enjoying it. Chapters are rather short, and the text easy. So I can sit down, bank out 20 pages and come back to it a few days later.
I’m about 100 pages into this and yeah it’s a weird one, but I like it. I’m ‘currently reading’ like 40 books now though, so it’ll be awhile til I finish it.
LOL. I have trouble when I try to do two or more at a time.
at most 4. Home, office, beach, travel, but never had to make a choice, each has its place.
also, if too close in style or even period i need to restart my brain, especially if a week between readings
