I would answer things are good for me and bad for our country. It’s not a great time to be an immigrant. It’s not a great time to be trying to conceive (or trying to avoid pregnancy) in many states. Inflation is starting to feel painful even for me. The environment is going to shit. Global politics are volatile. Education standards are abysmal. People aren’t having kids, some for entirely fixable societal reasons.
I don’t see it as pessimistic, I think it’s awareness and empathy.
I see people online talking about how bad things are in Canada.
Look. I have a roof. I have food. I’m happy. my kids have a better start in life than I did, I was given the opportunity to provide that for them. we are healthy happy and fed.
I know there are isolated problems and there are things we could tweak. but the country isn’t having problems or falling apart. it’s still a great place to be in almost every way. Things aren’t bad, they’re great.
I think my biggest issues with/in Canada right now are US threats to sovereignty and the fallout of the ridiculously easy rules for companies to hire TFWs. The TFW situation is preventing young people from getting jobs and a lot of older people and it’s leading to a lot of anti-immigrant feelings. It’s also impacting access to medical care, escalating housing costs, and slowing wage growth during a period of rapid cost of living increases though I’ll note that the situation is starting to improve with lower immigration rates. The difficulty is we need some immigration to counter low birth rates.
and we have problems with healthcare. and an uneasy alliance with first nations. and high energy costs.and people on govt welfare plans are living below the human dignity level.
it’s always something. always. but from a macro view, things are pretty damn good.
