We've always been at war with Venezuela

Of course. Thanks. I was thinking about Atwood when I wrote the post and have corrected it.

The government of Russia has made a formal diplomatic request that the United States stop its pursuit of an oil tanker that had been sailing for Venezuela and is now fleeing the Coast Guard in the Atlantic Ocean, according to two people with knowledge of the matter.

Royal we I guess, since even Republicans are questioning it

“I look forward to learning what, if anything, might constitutionally justify this action in the absence of a declaration of war or authorization for the use of military force." (Sen. Mike Lee, (R)-UT)

Noriega vibes

I wonder if it’s time to point out that a presidential kidnapping would go a long way towards making Mark Carney’s life simpler, apparently it’s kosher from an American perspective, and there is a history of Washington DC not faring well against Canadian military action…

So they basically left a power vaccuum in Venezuela.

This will turn out like Iraq as they have war gamed this scenario.

The various criminal factions will fight each other for control now.

I am no fan of Maduro, but this cannot be justified under international law no matter how much they try to spin it. Its pure banditry.

It also marks a return to the darkest days of US western hemispheric imperialism and militarism from the Mexican and Spanish-American wars to interventions in central and South America in the 1960s-80s that could suck the US into a new series of forever wars. Next up: Nicaragua, Cuba, Iran.…

Oh, and I am sure Xi just got the green-light for the takeover of Taiwan after this one.

Nevermind, Lee later said basically “I heard about what happened, so whatever.”

This and the Taiwan thing came to mind when I first saw the headlines about it. And also if spreading constitutional governance abroad by destroying it at home is the best strategy.

Why is nobody enjoying their democracy? I specifically requested it.

-- Trump, probably.

Difference being that Noriega had a publicized criminal indictment in the US over a year before hand, then lost badly in an election (order of 3-1) only to declare himself the winner in a landslide, and Americans in Panama were allegedly being directly threatened by Noriega. Whatever criticisms one may have over the Panama invasion, it had vastly more legitimacy to it.

Edit: I omitted the fact that the Panamanian parliament had issued a statement saying that they were in a state of war with the US. They claim, retroactively, that they meant the US pressure was an act of war, the Office of Legal Counsel took it hostilely.
