Voilà.
The oil companies hold all the cards and they know it. As stated before, they will want full financial and security guarantees before investing $US100 billion+ in Venezuela. Trump can say there are 25 other oil companies chomping at the bit to invest big in Venezuela but the US oil execs know that is just hot air.
It would be an amusing turn of events if a Chinese or Russian company took up the offer.
This was a really dumb suggestion on her part.
Comes off as pretty desperate to appease Trump. Also, Trump can do bupkis for her locally (she has no real power base there).
Hard disagree. It was a brilliant play.
In one stroke she demonstrated her willingness to forego personal accolades, while fighting for her people.
She will take on mythic hero overtones back home.
Do you know any Venezuelans?
I do in Spain (huge Venezuelan Diaspora in Spain) and they really don’t care about this stuff. Its just performative theatrics for them.
What they care about: can she improve their relatives lives on the ground in Venezuela?
And right now the answer is no. So she is ineffective.
There is a significant Venezuelan diaspora in Canada which I didn’t know about until recently. Not surprisingly, many work in the Alberta oil patch.
Just padding his resume?
238,539 if we can count cats.
Assumed office January 2025??
Remember this?
https://www.politico.com/news/2024/05/09/trump-asks-oil-executives-campaign-finance-00157131
Former President Donald Trump asked oil industry executives last month to donate $1 billion to aid his campaign to retake the White House, three people familiar with the conversation told POLITICO — a request that campaign finance experts said appeared troubling but is probably legal.
Not sure they’re getting much return. Oil companies want less supply, not more.
That’s brilliant. They can slow down the supply from Venezuela. They get higher prices, and and trump gets to say “see, it wasn’t about the oil”
The supply from Venezuela has been immaterial for a while… the only direction it can really go is up, which wouldn’t be much use to the US oil companies since it’ll put more pressure on prices… and then you layer on the risk and that’s why it’s “uninvestable”. Trump is living by a dated playbook, the shale revolution won the US energy independence already.
Agree. Follow the money. This conflict is not about oil, per se , but about the U$D dominance as the world’s reserve currency. Venezuela demonstrates how to circumvent “sanctions”.
China is receiving most of the Venezuelan oil. But it doesn’t run through the SWIFT system, and hence avoiding the US central bank and Treasury deportment. china lent/funded Venezuela and the loan repayments are not in dollars, they are in oil.
China has its own payment system, CIPS, for clearing international transactions. It is small but growing. This is a direct threat to US economic power. So…gotta stop this Venezuelan nonsense before it spreads. BOMBS WAY!

More alleged war-criming.
