United States Presidential & Congressional Election 2024

Digital access to Wapo and NYT is cheap.

Its like $2/week.

The business papers are the ones that charge a lot (WSJ and FT). Usually $60/month minimum.

Was in disbelief until I confirmed…

I only subscribe to the economist, although I check the WSJ headlines most days.

Right, so $8/month for WaPo and NYT. That’s $16.

If I wanted the local paper and a paper back home, … local paper is normally $13/month online, I could get it for $1 for 6 months right now. [I’m sure that’s doing wonders for the bottom line.] Back home paper - two choices: Paper A is $20/month for online, Paper B doesn’t offer an online version so it’s $35 month to have papers mailed to me that are going to be 5-7 days later than the publish date. Oh, and Paper A doesn’t really cover the area that Paper B does (intentional choice), so if for some godforsaken reason I wanted to really stay up to date on things, I’d have to get both.

So right there, I could easily be looking at $80 from 5 sources, not counting all the other places that might have a local story of interest that’s oh, you want to read this? Subscription only, please pay $8, $10, $12, $15, $99 for it! Oh, and all the ads that get splashed everywhere on all those pages. Or, I can browse the local radio station news pages for free* and get the high-level stuff. Really easy choice to make.

*Not really free, because you have to deal with ads - which gets cut down greatly with an ad-blocker, and as long as anything else is minimal, non-intrusive stuff and not pop-up, banner-up crap, the aggravating thing is every accept these cookies before using this site banner that comes up on a shitload of sites. But, if/when Google moves to get rid of ad-blocking in 2024, it’s going to make using some sites impossible because of the shitload of ads people put up on sites. But, that’s a thread for another day.

I want somebody to do original reporting and I understand that isn’t free. So I figure I should get a paid subscription somewhere.

My cost for the NYT is $5/wk. I’m on it a lot. I also do the WaPo for $2/wk. Combined, about $360/yr. When I was growing up, my folks subscribed to the local newspaper and my dad paid for TIME. So that doesn’t seem outrageous to me.

While I weep for the future of quality journalism, our parents didn’t have much option except whatever happened to be on TV if they wanted news. You could always check out a paper from the library or something but nothing convenient.

Papers also had a lot of coupons that were more valuable than they are today, with rewards apps taking over the coupon space. Arguably papers made up their value for some folk.

I would like a paid subscription service that offers a limited number of articles a month from many major media outlets. I’m not going to pay a subscription for all of NYT, WaPo, WSJ, FT, The Economist,… but if I could access some monthly content from all of them I’d pay for it.

One that allowed purchase of individual articles for a small fee might also work well.

Doug Burgum announces he’s suspending his 2024 presidential campaign | CNN Politics

Maybe he should have offered $50 gift cards to people who donated at least a dollar. Maybe he can try that in his upcoming failed 2028 campaign for President.

He seemed like one of the more sane Republicans, so I’m not sure if it’s a plus that the sane vote is consolidating or a minus that there’s insufficient grassroots support for sane candidates.

$12M of his own money and I first heard of him when he conceded.

That sounds like a great use of his time and money.

At least there was at minimum $22M of GOP donor money wasted on that.

Santos: Well, I wouldn’t call it ā€œwasted.ā€

(Thankfully) we are not bombarded with US political ads in Canada but as a result I have no idea what themes the Democrats are focusing on. Is there much in the way of advertising at this stage? If so, are the Democrats focusing on the ā€œthreat to democracyā€ that a potential second Trump presidency could bring? If he gets the Republican nomination, I would think that might be the theme to emphasize?

I’m not seeing any D ads. I am seeing some Trump ads ā€œKept us safe, blah, blah, blahā€.

But, I live in Iowa so they may not be national.

I’ve seen a few Biden ads so far, but not many. I’ve seen mostly GOP primary ads, and particularly ones from DeSantis PACs.

I don’t do TV but I’ve been getting political mailers. So far it’s mostly against my local state rep, who’s an absolute badass at defending LGBTQ rights, addressing homelessness issues, and more.

The mailers make me want to vote for her so much more. Things like ā€œShe voted to defund the policeā€. I get the mailers and think ā€œHell yeah I love my representative!ā€ and recycle them.

I’ve been starting to get political text message spam again.

Since I’m not in an early primary state…and since I don’t watch much TV… I haven’t been exposed to much early 2024 campaign advertising. However, I think on some of the 24/7 news/ā€œnewsā€ channels it’s to be expected (and, in a sense, never stops).
