United States Presidential & Congressional Election 2024

The fact that he called a vote today makes me think he has the votes to survive.

Romney, who’s about to retire… Murkowski? Pre-death McCain? Honestly trying to think of other Republicans (House or Senate) who’ve called for bipartisanship.

you named 3 senators. won’t help in the house. everyone who seemed to not be all in on being trumpy either got primaried or chose not to speak for the last few years.

Hm, yes, being higher-profile they were first to come to mind.

Honestly, I just googled a few lists of moderate House Republicans and allegedly they exist (fairly rarely), but in terms of publicity/media they’re relative nobodies. I’d never heard of Rep. Nancy Mace from South Carolina for example.

Nancy Mace has been making lots of headlines lately for being full on Hunter Biden conspiracy stuff and outspoken about the need for an impeachment inquiry, how Biden and Pelosi are bad (ignoring that Pelosi is no longer Democratic leader), supported some of Gaetz’s grandstanding over the CR, is anti funding Ukraine. lol at her being moderate.

She is effing loony.
Which proves the point that there really are no moderate GOP in the house.

Ah. Well she was listed as one of the most moderate Representatives (I believe mostly on the metric of voting with Democrats.)

But yes, Hunter/Joe impeachment people are being exhaustingly silly.

I did enjoy how their opening witness basically said, “Why am I here? None of this is linked to Joe Biden.” And he was their hand-picked opener

Looking now like he will be ousted, and the house effectively paralyzed until a new speaker is chosen.

Well shit. Government shutdown incoming IMO if this happens. Better think now if I need to hit the town hall for any purpose.

Why would your town hall be affected by the feds shutting down?

Lives in D.C.?
(No, he doesn’t, and I do not know D.C. funding mechanisms.)

He should say, “better get to a local National Park.”

McCarthy voted out as speaker.

With no Speaker, third in line is Senate President Pro Tempore (Patty Murray (D-WA) ), so Democrats hold all the cards. They might not care that nobody can win Speaker.

Until the 45 day count down to the next shut down runs out.

Correct. Gaetz and company will be perfectly happy to have endless failed speaker votes. That’s a great way to break the government.

Do you actually need a speaker to conduct official Congress business?

Yes. They can’t do anything else until they have one. And must remain in session until they do have one.

I wonder if democrats are more likely to get blamed for a shutdown now that they helped vote the speaker out.

As opposed to this last weekend when McCarthy was blaming Democrats for the near shutdown on sunday news shows?

One of the reasons Democrats ousted McCarthy:

Just on Sunday, McCarthy went on CBS and charged Democrats with wanting a shutdown. That infuriated Democrats, who voted nearly unanimously for the government spending bill when fewer than half of Republicans did.

Which was supposed to be Feinstein except she declined. Granted, replacing her with Murray would have been a quick unanimous consent request, but we weren’t that far from having Blinken (not from Men in Tights) in line right after Harris.
