The “in fairness” seems pretty funny given how close he came to getting killed. So, “in fairness” we should have just let him get killed?
I don’t know what definition they’re using for Trump’s sundown towns, but the sundown towns that I’ve heard about didn’t have “various degrees”. They had you had to be out of town with dire consequences if you didn’t.
Various degrees = some states have more, some fewer. Should have said “in varying quantity.”
For the sake of argument, let’s temporarily pretend that we’re discussing the expenses Presidents and former Presidents incur when they go on vacation.
I think it is reasonable that the person be liable for the expenses they would normally incur as a private citizen for taking such a vacation.
In reality, it is bloody expensive when a President goes on vacation…and costs are still elevated when an ex-President vacations…because of the logistics involved in security, etc.
A reasonable argument can be made that for a President, those extra expenses are necessary for the good of the country, and therefore they should be borne by the government, rather than the President. And for former Presidents…extra security and protection from retribution is a perk of retirement.
Switching back to campaigning for President… When the Trump campaign has been criticized for not paying demands from local governments to pay for things like police overtime due to rallies, etc., the Trump campaign has responded “we’ve paid for what we asked for; those extra expenses were the result of Secret Service demands, and therefore the Secret Service should pick up the tab.”
Now, I don’t know how accurate that response has been, and there’s certainly plenty of reason to be skeptical of anything said by Team Trump. But if it were accurate, I think it Team Trump’s response is consistent with my thesis regarding vacation expenses.
I can’t be 100% certain on the topic of campaign security, but in general, Secret Service recommendations for protection are that. Recommendations. They might be strong, but that’s all they are. I’m fairly certain there is no law preventing Trump from holding rallies with no security. This very well might be different for a sitting president as opposed to a private citizen campaigning.
The reason that presidents don’t drive is not due to a law. That’s a common misconception. It’s a Secret Service policy that presidents should not drive and presidents have voluntarily obeyed that.
So, I may be wrong but I interpret this as
The Secret Service suggested the GOP candidate should should have enhanced security. We agree that we want their security, but we don’t want to pay for our voluntary agreement to it.
Done Trump:
…and that is not the impression that has been communicated by the Trump campaign.
Like I tried to disclaim…it’s entirely probable that the messaging from the Trump campaign was misaligned from reality.
But I still can’t help but wonder: When the Secret Service makes “suggestions” that its protectees can “voluntarily” choose to follow… are the “suggestions” framed such that the “voluntary-ness” seems more like politeness rather than an option you can really elect to not follow?

You’re telling me that the Secret Service, you’re telling me my own bodyguards are gonna escort me to the bunker?

Your feet may touch the ground a couple of times along the way but I doubt it.
Trump is now saying that the Army is lying about what happened at Arlington.
My MAGA MIL was posting yesterday on Facebook how Trump was just honoring the family and it was actually Harris who dishonored them by not going to Arlington. Trump was asked to be there. A conspicuous lack of mention that he broke federal law. Democrats are liars and hate the military and veterans, Trump is the most pro-military president there has ever been.
Wanted to ask her something about bone spurs, but don’t need to rock that boat.
Washington was pretty pro US military
Eisenhower
Grant
Kennedy
Teddy Roosevelt
We would all love Trump if it wasn’t for the media telling us we need to hate him.
Immigrant leader of a militia of violent immigrants
Medal of Honor recipient, not that impressive
I believe 31 of the 45 presidents have served in the military in some capacity before becoming President though some much more than others.
Washington wasn’t an immigrant?
He was born in England. Or, at least, one of their colonies…
but to immigrate one actually has to change location, not just change the country they are living in.
I don’t think the Virginian colony was considered part of England at the time. If it had been there probably wouldn’t have been a war, then at least.
In pretty sure when people say that it is meant to be tounge-in-cheek
