United States Presidential & Congressional Election 2024

Looks like one of them is courting gay voters.

ā€œMake America Floridaā€ is an amusing campaign slogan

Interesting polling here. Not surprising, but I think it shows Dems are in a precarious position in 2024 as liberal viewpoints are falling out of favor.

I guess the social media campaigns of right wingers blowing up cases of bud light and trashing target is working. Republicans won the war on abortion, so they have just moved on to distort the reality of the next issue that will bring people to the polls.

It is very interesting. Even more interesting:

  1. Americans broadly agree that America is immoral, and becoming less moral.
  2. Americans have become more accepting, on average, on every single issue, from gay marriage to pornography to suicide to smoking pot.

And yet they also somehow increasingly identify with social conservatism.

I guess you might hypothesize that it’s backlash etc. to our own acceptance, but it’s pretty funny/crazy anyway.

In any case, looking at the numbers, it looks like the trick will be for conservatives to sell themselves as ā€œconservativeā€ while not actually pushing back on any single issue.
Ie. Nobody wants a politician that is actually anti-abortion.

So ā€œvery conservativeā€ will actually mean, ā€œnot very liberalā€?

I think part of this is that the issues have changed. For example I voted against Murphy in NJ when I mostly vote Democrat. Is it socially conservative to be against mandated masking of vaccinated kids in public schools?

I think the trouble is ā€œliberal viewpointsā€ are increasingly illiberal.

I think the trouble is that as extremists on the left and right gain mindshare in the US, both the left and right seem to be shifting more towards authoritarianism.

Of course on the masking front, I could point out that it’s tempting to lean towards authoritarianism when so many people seem inclined to be myopic / insensitive towards others / unwilling to behave rationally because they don’t want to be inconvenienced in the short term…

Definitely agree

I’ve said before (not here, I think, but elsewhere) that people who have libertarian inclinations have a duty to behave rationally and to be mindful of effects of their decisions beyond just themselves. Failure to do so only invites the government to become more involved.

I think the bar moved.

In 2023, people can identify as being ā€œsocially conservativeā€ because they oppose ā€œgender confirming careā€ for kids, or they think ftm trans shouldn’t compete in girls sports. But, they also accept same sex marriages.

10 years ago, accepting ss marriage (while ignoring trans issues) would have made you ā€œliberalā€.

And 30 years ago, you were a social conservative if you didn’t approve of interracial marriage.

What the polygamy.

If you were given the survey would you identify yourself as ā€œsocially conservativeā€?

I don’t think that survey reflects this forum at all.

And has more to do with people getting excited about trans-politics? Which this forum either supports or doesn’t care much about. (with maybe Nick and Ranger being exceptions?)

I don’t care what any adult does. I do care about children getting the treatment and I definitely care about parents being excluded from their children’s decisions about transgender care. No one under 18 is in a mental place to make these decisions about their life.

I’m a bit confused. Who do you think should decide what:
Parents
Teens
Doctors
State/Federal/Local Government

And how they should decide?

And I don’t mean to argue. For me it qualifies as too rare and too harmless to worry about. But I am interested in your stance

If I was asked if I’m socially conservative I’d say no. But when I chat with my sister who recently graduated from a very liberal college they wouldn’t consider me particularly liberal. I certainly feel as socially liberal as I always have. I’d say I’m not especially progressive, but liberal.

Probably need to be actively progressive, and not just sitting in our La-Z-Boys. You know: ā€œIf you’re not doing something with us, then you’re against us!ā€ kind of BS.

I’m confused by your response. Do you think that there are currently kids who receive medication without their parents consent? Because that is illegal and I’m unaware of anyone advocating otherwise.

I think this is a choice of treatment that permanently changes everything about the persons life. They need to choose this treatment themselves not have it put on them by a Dr, parent, psychiatrist or whatever. They can’t make that choice by themselves until they are 18.
