I take it that Umpires can only be discussed during June?
it’s peak season!
entertaining call last night. Cubs have runner on 1st, 1 out, 3-2 count on batter. ball 4 is delivered while the base runner took off stealing. catcher throws. on the field, umpires make almost no call at the time but the mets (defense) challenge the play at 2nd.
video shows the runner (awarded by force by the walk issued) slid, touched the base, then lost contact with it and while doing so was tagged. so he was ruled out (correctly IMO). Comedy ensues from there.
You are off the base and get tagged. Not sure what the controversy is. Live ball. You are assured safe passage to the base, and that’s it.
I agree it sucks not to know, but that means playing it safe as a runner.
100%. interestingly, the fielder who tagged him did so as part of the tag attempt to stop the “steal” taht wasn’t. just chance that there was contact with the trailing hand/mitten when the lead hand went off the bag. counts all the same
You can overrun first base though…
saw this on our umpire channel this morning, how have I missed this thread.
did it also have the youth game where the umpires didn’t credit the out at 1b bc the defender slapped the base w his hand (possessing the ball in glove). coach acted like a moron after, but the call was sub-terrible for a 2person crew of older dudes to get wrong
