Trump's Pardons

He is all about “law and order” - the more ruthless, the better. The more white the perpetrator, the better. Remaining pardons will be focused toward LEOs who’ve been brought up on federal charges and military members who’ve been shown to have done wrong overseas. He’s going to clear the deck there. I would also start looking at anyone involved in trying to screw over the U.S. with shenanigans on January 6. He’ll pardon every last one of them so they can’t be prosecuted for their acts against the U.S. government.

Those in and around the Administration? Those pardons are going to come out January 20, probably right before Biden is inaugurated. It’s going to come down at the latest possible moment so that they can get all the criming in possible and then escape without consequences. [State officials should be paying attention to these, because it indicates where they should start investigating if they’re not already doing so.]

Meanwhile, people sitting in federal prison for considerably less damaging crimes will continue to have to sit there with no hope of leniency, and people who’ve been convicted of and served time for considerably less damaging crimes will still have to carry those criminal records around with them because … fuck them.

This discussion was had in 2019 when Matt Bevin was voted out of office as governor of Kentucky. He pardoned (from memory) 600 and some folks. Many were big donors family members and what not. One was convicted of murdering and chopping up his wife. One other was convicted of sexually molesting several children. They were an unconscionable lot of people. The solution to this problem that was bandied about in KY and possibly made into law was that no executive pardons can take place in the period between an election and the end of the term. This would force the executive to pardon everyone before the election and have that be part of the body of work that voters decide on when they head to the polls. This is fine except for a 2 term executive the entire 2nd term technically falls under this window, but it would solve these problems we are seeing with Trump right now.
